Glad things worked out for you Pete!!! I used to do my own oil changes on my little "RC car" Rav 4 as my friends called it since I had scanner antennas on it for all my radios. It was just a little time consuming but it was a nice feeling knowing that I did it.
With my pickup truck now, I have a family friend who's a mechanic (and still is for my routine brake jobs or fluid drains and fills etc) or the dealership for an oil change and tire rotations since my brother works there now and my mechanic friend doesn't have a lift. He does it all with multiple jacks and ramps for whatever the situation entails.
I'm always extremely cautious as I've heard a few stories of people running into similar issues like you did. I trust our family friend with my life and my truck. But I've had a few very minor run-in's with the dealerships. Luckily, I caught them all in the act or before I left the lot. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned for all of us to keep an eye on our vehicles when they're in the hands of others.
