Just wanted to know if any of you guys gave up anything for Lent. I normally don't, but this year I'm thinking about soft drinks. I'm trying to cut back and figure that this is as good of an excuse as any. I still have till tomorrow to decide though.

I'm not sure, my wife was raised Catholic, but we are Christian and Lent is not that big of a deal in our church, though some do observe the fast. I may observe, but want to find something meaningful if i do. Cigars seems like overkill, so maybe coffe and soda.

Speaking of fasting, ya'll hear about the study that just came about saying that fasting is really good for your long term health? I'll see if I can find it and post it.

Threadjack over.

Soft drinks are easy. I only have 1 or 2 a month. Good luck...

But, I don't observe Lent.

Giving up soda, and red meat............................ouch. A sacrifice that is really going to hard for me. So it is chicken, fish, turkey, and whatever else I can indulge in.

I'm giving up hard liquor. It's going to be rough since during lent, I have my birthday, St. Patrick's Day and the Great Guinness Toast. The Toast will actually be the hardest because I'll be going to an Irish pub that has just about every Irish Whiskey that can be imported...but at least I'll have plenty of Guinness :glassesgr

Here is the Wikipedia definition aimed at the Western Christian Denominations.

Lent, in most Christian denominations, is the forty-day liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter.[1] The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert, where, according to the Bible, he endured temptation by Satan.[2] Different churches will calculate the forty days differently.

The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer—through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial—for the annual commemoration of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, as celebrated during Holy Week, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In Western Christianity, Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday until Easter Saturday.[1] The six Sundays in Lent are not counted among the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter", a celebration of Jesus' victory over sin and death.[2] In those churches which follow the Byzantine tradition (e.g. Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholics), the forty days of Lent are calculated differently (see Great Lent): the fast begins on Clean Monday, Sundays are included in the count, and it ends on the Friday before Palm Sunday. The days of Lazarus Saturday, Palm Sunday and Holy Week are considered a distinct period of fasting. For more detailed information about the Eastern Christian practice of Lent, see the article Great Lent.
