Greek Orthodox Lent is a time of fasting, which means abstaining from foods that contain blood (meats, fish) and products from animals with blood (milk, cheese, eggs, etc.). The purpose of fasting is to cleanse the body as well as the spirit in preparation for accepting the Resurrection at Easter, which is the most sacred of all observances in the Greek Orthodox faith.

Lent is giving up meat i.e. beef, pork, chicken, turkey... actually any meat but fish. The days that you should not have meat would be today Ash Wednesday and every Friday after for the next 40 days. During Lent practicing Catholics usually give up something they enjoy such as booze like me. This a loose but basic definition of Lent.
