So, this has been bugging me for quite some time. I don't smoke much out there as far as NCs go and up until recently I pretty much ignored the NC world completely. Once I opened my eyes back up and started looking around I saw some things that really threw me for a loop. I'm curious if it's just me. What's up with NC brands using Cuban names for their cigars? Tatuaje Unicos, Gran Habanos Siglos, R.B. Fundadores to name just a few.

I know it must be difficult to come up with new and inventive names, but COME ON! I've got no problem with using names like Churchill, Lancero, Robusto, etc. Those are just common names. But when you start using things like Siglo and Fundadores, I mean it's blatent plagiarism. Hell, I could be wrong, but I seem to remember seeing an NC, that wasn't Partagas, P2 the other day!

name recognition!! the oldest trick in the sales business. and since cuba is not recognized, i don't think it's an issue!

I think the use of cuban names is pretty lame. However with Cuba not being considered at all in the USA for legal issues their brand names are fair game. I don't agree with it because the embargo to say the least lame and misguided. It seems like they'll allow us full auto firearms before they lift the embargo at this point!

i always get you two mixed up, what with the Jw at the beginning of the names and all.

ANyhow, i think it's like Jwin said...name recognition and a bit of a lack of creativity.

Regardless, i'd like to live in your world...opening your eyes again to the NC world. That must mean you've been on the dark side for quite some time now. i'm jealous.

Welcome back, though it would appear that you won't be staying long with all this plagerism and such.

As for that P2, he also makes a P4, p3 and p1. However, he does claim to be making ciagrs in the cuban style, and his roller is cuban, so he does have some validity in that name. Can't speak for the others though.

I chuckle to myself when I look at some of these NC's that have second bands to look like the EL's Cuba puts out. They will do whatever possible to sell their smokes. If someone spends money to buy a NC "siglo" whatever, then it worked.

Never had a San Cristobal, so I have no comment on how good it is, but I this it is pretty odd that they use the same names as the CC brands.

Personally I think it is funny how some NC brands use the word Cuba/cuban/Habano in their names.

It is an Ashton San Cristobal versus a San Cristobal De La Habana. ALl marketing to catch your eye.

This is just one of the issues that makes me stay away from NC's in general. Now there are quality cigars that come out of alot of different countries...and I enjoy Padron, some AF product etc....but this issue along with the fact that each marca has to have like 15 different lines just makes the whole industry seem a little "rediculous" at times.

this thread made my head hurt...

maybe they should call them "Grand Havana Centuries"?

or maybe its payback because Cubans are making fatter cigars and *gasp* maduros?

Some of those names are spanish words, they aren't made up brands or anything.

Siglo - Century
Fundadores - Founders
Unico - as in El Unico (The one [I love])
