Lane 1Q in my newb cob (still the only pipe I own). Trying to graduate from the Carter Hall into things that are a bit more challenging to pack and keep lit. So far I am not scoring well.

EDIT: took me half the bowl but i got it smoking good now. Tasty!

Gaslight in a new Dr. G Grand Duke.
that's actually really pretty for a DrG! nice pipe, sir. o)
Thanks! That's the same thing I thought when I found it. Reminded me of the shell blast on a Dunhill (albeit very lose in this comparison). Happy camper, but will be more happy when I build up some cake and don't taste this presmoked bowl treatment anymore. Ha.

i dig this reclaimed medico, a distressed natural look, but it DOES NOT want but to smoke hot and damp. so, just putting a pack or two of CH through it, and doing the bowl shake, see if i can jump start a cake formation and force the thing to submit that way.

may sound stupid, but my peterson and I didn't get along for the first year, and it (finally!) turned into a champ.

instead of my usual fastidious swab of the bowl with a couple few pipe cleaners, just cover the bowl opening with your thumb and shake. afterwards, swab out ONLY the stem to draft hole. the ash stays in and adheres to the sides of the chamber.

i am one who usually smokes rather slow and cool, so i don't NEED a lot of cake formation for protection. and my usual swab out leaves little left, but (over a year and counting) what little i have actually built up is even and tight. i might have to ream out one of my pipes in a decade or so at this rate...

CH with the shake method will definetly work- best combo for cake. On a side note- Peterson is notorious for break-in. I vowed to never buy a new Pete again...
