Modifying a Rossi Rubino or other pipe is a good way to acquire pipes you don't mind knocking around. The Rubino had a lot of fills hidden under its dark shellac. Once sanded, it reveals the grain but also leaves some imperfections in the wood. Thus, it will look good AND already have some dings on it. It's basically pre-damaged even before it falls out of your truck the first time.

What fid you use? A 3M foam sanding block, or regular sandpaper? What grit?

A combo of sandpaper and 3M sanding sponge, both 220 grit.
