This was my Saturday...

Morning went to Walgreens to pick up some prescriptions, store all run by indians (the asian kind)

Then stopped at BK for a croissant and coffee, once again indians

Stopped by a Rip N Run (7-11), clueless as to what language was spoken there

Stopped for gas on the way home.......take a guess!!!

MY QUESTION....where are the American people working these days....

Where are they working? Could be at the Rip N Run, gas station, and Burger King.
Just cause they weren't speaking English, doesn't mean they're not Americans.
Newsflash: some Americans are Indian and Asian. They speak other languages, often in addition to English.
And a good deal of them probably know when to use "is" and when to use "are."

It is very annoying but technically I bet many are Americans. After all we are a melting pot.

I just can't stand when I can't even understand what the fuck they are saying!!!!

I'm not really sure what the purpose of this post is...But chances are, all those individuals you encountered today were Americans, Mitch...Americans come in all different shapes, sizes, colors...Americans speak many different languages (while this I don't agree with, I do wish they would all learn to speak English, but in the same regard, I know many non-Americans that speak English better than a person that was born in America, and lived all their life here, soo...)

I left safety (well, relative safety, depends on how safe you consider yourself in a COB 10,000 miles from CONUS, hundreds of miles from the nearest friendly forces) every night, when the sun went down with 6 other men. They were all Americans. But you know what, I was one of only 3 that were born in America. Excuse the lack of names, but OPSEC.... A---- was born in Mexico City...he came to American before I was even thought of...And he picked up a gun for this country. K----- was from Korea...He put on a uniform and saluted a flag for his newly adopted country. And M--------- was Iranian. He fled his country when the Shah fell, and came to America for his wife J--------- and his daughter L-------...He worked for years in America, as a successful business owner...Then his adopted country was attacked, and he did what he felt all true hearted American men should do, he picked up a weapon to strike back. By your post above, I'd guess that you could line A----, K----, and M---- up side by side, look them up and down, and ask where the Americans were at. I would point out that you were looking at 3 of the best examples of Americans that exist.

American does not mean white baptist (or catholic, protestant, christian, whichever belief system you subsrcibe to) males....An American is anyone who lives in this country, loves this country, does things for the betterment of this country and her people. An American is one who would fight till his dying breath, any invader of this country (please do not take this statement as saying you have to be in the military and fighting this war, or ever supporting this current war. You can be totally against this war, and be an American. But if the time came that foreign forces land on our shores, you would arm yourself and toe the line. You would defend what is yours, mine, and ours).

I'm done with the soapbox, who wants it now?

Good points on a lot of posts in here. My only problem is when I run into someone who doesn't speak English. Doesn't happen often, but it shouldn't happen at all. That is if I'm speaking to another American.

Perhaps this issue and frustration, which I share by the way , is really in communication versus nationality. The country was formed by the melting of many cultures that developed a distinct language version of English with multiple dialects. The focus though was always on communication and learning to communicate. I can remember playing chess with a Russian expat and his struggle to undeerstand what I was saying. I decided to learn some Russian and when I tried it out he was unhappy. "We speak english. This is America". His focus was on learning to communicate in English.

Today it seems that we have lost some of this focus and instead switched to adherence to our separate native languages. The melting pot may be separating.

I'm not too certain why anyone cares what language someone else speaks. I live in a place where people speak many languages, and I never have a problem communicating with people in shops, etc...

I also find that people from South Asia generally speak very good English, since India and Pakistan were once a Britsh Colony.
