To me, CWS hit it on the head. It's the "melting/melding pot" issue. If you want to come to America and be an American, part of that is learning and using the language. Should you forsake your native, or any other language for that matter? Hell no. But you damn sure need to learn to speak, read and write English. And well enough that hand signals, sign language, etc. aren't necessary. No one (well mostly, I guess) is asking you to give up your native culture, heritage or language completely, but if you wish to be a citizen of this great nation then you are American. Not Chinese/Pakistani/Indian/Mexican/whatever living in America. That's not how it works.

Believe it or not, English is not the official language in the US.
Just happens to be what the "majority" of the population speak for now.
There actually is no official language for the US. It was almost German back in the day.
Although, I highly doubt another language other than English would become the official language here but stranger things have happened.

Let's just say everyone's out there trying to make a buck and survive. Mitch, have you looked at corporate america lately? Plenty of americans there and very few non-american's (or minorities? not sure which angle you're going for?).

But seriously tho, for some this thread could be viewed as highly offensive. Why start a thread like that? But what do I know? I've seen threads much tamer than this get locked.

I dont want to single myself out as a racist.......not one, never wil be one....

But what I tried to say and it came out wrong was that of the stores I went in, I had to change my way of speaking in order communicate....

Its OK to hire whoever you want to run a business, but my beef was that when I had to communicate with these operators, I basically had to use hand signs cause they did not speak English....

I hope I have made my post appear more sensible, I do not and never want to single myself out to all my fellow friends here.

STEVE: I personally apologize to you if I made myself sound ignorant, it wasnt suppose to.

There....that was a load off my chest......Mitch:smokingbo :smokingbo

That's good to hear/read Mitch.

And I know exactly what you are talking about with regards to having to point and use hand gestures to communicate what it is you are looking for/trying to buy to someone with perfectly good hearing.

I like to use hand signs as well :angerFU:

No offense taken Mitch, I just think your post was a little immature. I understand your point and agree with the overall point and feeling behind the original post. I too share the feeling: If your in my country, speak my language damn it! I even think things to myself that I do not post so I am not misunderstood or misrepresent intent on controversial topics such as this. I just feel pointing a finger at a single region or ethnic background was wrong and you clarified your intent. Point made

So basically Mitch, the bitching was more a matter of the individuals not being able to speak English, than their heritage...Okay...That I can relate with...I do believe that if you do plan on doing business in a certain area, or with a certain group of people, it is just good business sense to speak the language that the majority of your customers speak....If I was going to open a shop in Mexico City, I would damned sure want to speak Spanish, or have several Spanish speakers in my employ...If I was opening a store in St. Petersburg, I wiould want to speak Russian, and employ Russian speakers, if I opened a shop in Texas, I would want to speak Texan :)grinFU:)...

You know, both of my grandparents had lots of native american blood in thier background. So you all should be speaking that language......

Just kidding guys.

It is a shame what happened to the people that were here before it was called america.
They had a system where the woman raised the children, cooked, cleaned, took care of all the day to day details and the men hunted and fished all day.

Then the white man came here and tried to improve upon that system.

I somehow missed this thread yesterday and upon reading the begining of it today I was looking for a reason to lock it. And it was there. But after reading the rest of the thread and the responses by some of the members of our board that might of been offended by the begining and the way it has turned out I am very proud of it.

Sometimes words dont come out right.
But this thread almost went from being locked to getting moved to the libations and cafe' room.

I have never had thai food but understand it is very spicy. Somebody tell me more details.

Not all Thai food is spicy John, and most places will tone it down for you. For some really typical, good Thai, try Pad Thai (rice noodles with chicken or shrimp usually in a tangy peanut sauce, this one's the wife's staple) or Panang Curry (Chicken in a red-ish curry and coconut milk (kind of sweet and spicey) broth served over white rice, my absolute favorite, can usually be had mild to very spicey). For an appetizer, if you are feeling a little adventurous, try the Mee Krob (or Mee Grob). It's crunchy noodles with chicken and shrimp in a sweet sticky sauce. It's like an appetizer/dessert combination almost.

Thai food is pretty good. I usually just get the big noodles, chicken, egg, and some veggies. I forget what kind of sauce though. They do use a lot of peanut oil, I know that.
