As an off-road enthusiast, I have two Jeep wranglers.

One is street legal, the other is modified/chopped/built to the point that it won't pass safety or emissions inspections anymore.

The other one, which is technically still street legal, is what I lovingly refer to as our "deathtrap"

Jeep Wranglers are a no-compromise off-road vehicle that are just barely suitable for street driving. As the only body-on-frame "truck" under 1-ton (in fact, they are only 1/4 ton) with a live solid front axle as opposed to independent front suspension, it should be obvious to anyone why they drive like shit on the street. But because of that solid front axle, they are unmatched off-road by anything else on the market.

Jeep Wranger = purpose-built vehicle...and that purpose is NOT street driving.

I am in the process of selling a 2002 diesel Silverado, and I am looking to buy a 1998ish Dodge 12v diesel. They last forever, the drivetrain is easy to work on/cheap, and the biggest thing for me, there's only 12 or so wires in the engine bay! My chevy has about 25 in just one harness! New cars scare the crap out of me and for someone that likes working on their on vehicles this new stuff isn't for me. I had to change the WP on my duramax and it took me like 5-6 hours. It was a nightmare but better than paying some dude $800 to do it.

Will the smart car make this list next year? There is no way you can survive a high speed impact in it and it you do, someone was looking after you.
