and in my work, people you may not know who they are...
ex-CSA (cheif of staff of the army) Gen Shinseki
the guy who wrote the book "we were soldiers once, and young."
some of the officers that were in "black hawk down," names are escaping me now.
GEN(r) Freddie Franks - the guy who had a book written with tom clancy, about the first Gulf war. he retired as a 4 star, and worked with our company as a mentor to current corps and division army commanders. had him sign his book for my brothers b-day (he just got back from Iraq as well).
LTG(r) Dave Grange - no, not the one that is interviewed on CNN, this is his DADDY! dude was a private in the rangers at normandy, then went through korea and vietnam... a great american. i talked to him minutes after he found out about the 9-11 attacks on the WTC. we were working with the 42nd NG division, which is mostly NY and NJ guys at the time (but at ft. leavenworth, ks for a seminar).
i could go on and on...
here's one:
Dr. Bill Reeder - he was interviewed on CNN when those people were ambushed and taken hostage. i worked directly with this guy and he brought me the tape to make into mpg's so he could put it on disk and send to his friends/family. what makes him famous? he was in the last group of POWs who were released from hanoi hilton. his chopper was shot down and he broke his back, then spent 3 months in a jungle camp, followed by a 3 month march up to hanoi, all without medical attention. i've had to drive halfway across germany with just him in the car, talking about everything. then, we had to drive for a few hours to interview another fine american, marine LTG(r) Cheatham, who liberated the city of Wei during the tet offensive. one helluva interview for 3+ hours, talking about the differences between jungle and urban warfare...
i'm sure i'm forgetting some people.
oh, the guy who commanded the unit that found saddam hussein (col rudisheim), he was the Col in charge of my team for a few years before he went to 4th ID (and then iraq).
