Here's my FleaBay purchase that arrived today:

Oak pipe stand
(L-R) The Briar Ltd, Royal York, Kirstem (I think - hard to read the stamp)

The stem on the Kirstem is snapped, which I knew, but I can't seem to remove it.

The whole lot was $15 so if I have to toss this one it won't be a big deal. But I would like to repair it if possible.

Okay, so with a pair of pliers I managed to pull the stem out. At least now I know why it was so difficult…

Now to find out if I can get a replacement. If not, I'll get a regular stem, Polish it up, and keep it as a decorative piece and not smoke it.

Okay, it's a Kirsten pipe and, yes, I can get a replacement mouthpiece for it. Now I need to figure out how to get the valve at the end off.
If you have a Free standing torch that has a air port on it to make it a soft flame or torch you can turn it onto the soft flame and just heat it alittle to melt the tars. I had to do that once with one I had. Didn't take but 30 to 45 seconds of turning it over the flame then came right off...

First of all, don't torch your monitor!

Thanks for the suggestion. Judging by the amount of gunk when I finally got the stem off, I don't think the previous owner ever cleaned it. I'm sure you're right and that it is the tar that has sealed the valve in place.

I have a couple of soft flame torches I can use.

A new stem is less then six dollars and, worst case scenario, the shank is a $15 replacement. The expensive part of the system is a bowl and the bowl with this one is in perfect condition. Of course, he's to be cleaned, deodorized, sanitized, etc.

So, even if I have to replace those two parts, I still will have gotten a good deal.

Nothing special today. Just a replacement stem for my aro cob since I stole the stem from it for my rock cob and it looks better with the black and white swirl.

If all the other parts have been removed from the metal shank, might try tossing it in a hot oven for a bit (line the pan with foil if you ever plan on using it again). Should soften the tar and metal will expand consistently the ought the piece. Used to do that with real greased and gunked up machine assemblies I was trying to fix.
