Reviewing and blogging led me to repping these brands. They were cigars that I liked after reviewing them and contacted them because I knew they had no representation out here in Texas. I haven't reviewed a single cigar of theirs after I have started repping for them for integrity sakes. They are just brands that I believed in and thought that they need to be shared with the state of Texas. It was more coincidence than anything that I started repping for them.
I understand if you don't review those cigars, after you have begun repping them.

But still seems a conflict of interest, somehow, that you are a cigar rep, and a blogger/reviewer. As a rep, you would want to promote those cigars. BUT, as a blogger/reviewer, you are going to be talking about some cigars that you may recommend.

Just odd... Sorry. :dunno:

The other part about that which frustrates me Aaron is that of the couple people I can think of as the worst offenders of this, not one of them has a 'BOTL Donor' tag on their profile....
:thumbsup::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause:

A joke .
As a non-doner , if I had to donate just to join the forum , that will change the motive for me , thats just me .
There's no one here forcing anyone one donating however you get way more out of BOTL than you put in.

The cigar industry is a small world to tell you the truth. I have no problem promoting other brands and many of them promote us. We do what we do out of passion not competition. Trust me, repping boutique brands doesn't make you much money. I do it out of passion, belief, and camaraderie with the people involved.

Heck I started off as an ego-ma-NIGH-a-cal cigar blogger a back in 1995... heck there wasn't even a name for what I did back then... And look where it got me. <snicker>

I agree, lets burn all the bloggers at the stake!!!

In all seriousness, I really doubt any of them do it for the freebies or for their egos, it really is more work than most folks realize. I think almost all the bloggers do it because they really are cigar crazed fools like myself.

My 'tude is they help to get real cigar related info out into the world better than we can ourselves at times. I know I learn more about other factories releases from blogs/forums than I do even being neck deep in the industry. There is simply not enough time to keep up with everything, so for me, I like them.

Sure sometimes you want to backhand a few with a frying pan, but hey that is the case with anyone that is a critic. You take the good with the bad, and imo there is far more good.

And ultimately it does not matter what I think anyways, they are going to do what they want to do. Nobody could stop me when I was a "blogger", I just wrote whatever I wanted to write... hmmm, maybe that is why JR hired me in the first place... it was some great Lew Rothman hatched conspiracy I tell you!!!

I imagine that when the day comes that I hang up my spurs and all the legal non-this and non-that stuff runs it course I will return to being a cigar blogger.

Consider yourself forewarned... ;>

There are some bloggers I really like. Most of the rest I don't pay attention to. I think it has value because these days there are so many new cigars on the market, LEs, etc., so it's nice to find a couple reviewers who share your cigar preferences to give you their opinions. I personally think that the good cigar reviews are helpful for the industry, as are more casual review forums such as the reviews on BOTL.

As to "ego," I think that ANY review-oriented blog/website is going to be egocentric almost by definition. The only reason to publish your opinions is that you think others want to hear them. I've seen some that do come off as pompous, though, and I usually don't come back.

Ever read movie reviews? Food critics? These people often write a negative review just because, or find the smallest dumb thing to criticize because they are CRITICS. It can get pretty ridiculous. That's how the field is, and I wouldn't expect the cigar review community to look much different.

The cigar blogs/websites I like are those who try to be impartial and don't pander, and are also honest "I like the Tatuaje profile, so it's not a surprise that I liked this cigar" for example. I also prefer guys/gals I know smoke plenty of cigars, and have done so for years. I don't really care about the opinions of bloggers who are relatively new to the hobby ... not that "Noob Reivews" don't have a place, but I think people with more refined palates can offer more insight.

I've even thought of doing a cigar blog myself, just for fun. But a solo venture takes a lot of work and I'm too anal to half-do something.
Nate I agree with you whole heartedly, and I love your Signature Lines:glassesgr

What an interesting and funny read. When I returned to smoking about 3 years ago I read a lot of the blogs as I was searching for what I liked and wanted other people's opinions. As time went on I found what I liked - in cigars and in blogs, so I only check a couple blogs myself. I must have missed this big ego-maniacal blog boom.

How about we start a blog to rate and review the cigar blogs (we could even rate ourselves #1).

I look at a cigar bloggers as someone that expresses their opinion on line. I rarely read them. I prefer to listen to people I have met r know that have similar tastes to me. Every day folks that may or may not be blessed by the cigar powers that be with "samples." I would rather know what Tree Frog Frank, or Hendy or Jeff think about a cigar. That way I know that it is an independent assessment not one fueled by who they believe they are cigar experts. I read these reviews on BOTL. I will not follow a forward. That's just me.

For me, as a newer entry into the cigar podacasting arena, I think that people get into trouble when they take their opinions too seriously. They are only opinions after all... And this subjectivity means that there really is no right or wrong answer.

I do read a few that I enjoy, and that I have found share similar tastes to me. Same thing with podcasts - I listen to those that are able to present the material in an efficient format without a 2-hour plus time commitment. My episodes run 15-ish minutes because that is the content format that fits into my listening preferences. It it for everyone? Not by a long shot. I do it because I enjoy it, and I enjoy cigars.

Oh well... I could go on about this for quite some time...

Bottom line - for me there are good ones that are doing it for the right reason(s), and there are those that aren't. Most are pretty easy to spot. Personally, if I ever fall out of the "doing it for the right reason" category, I am unplugging my mic.

I've stopped reading most reviews because it seems that every one I read lately is nothing but praise....as if the reviewer is affraid to post something negative or give a cigar a low rating. I don't know why. In the past year I've seen more people give 90+ ratings than I have in the prior 4 years combind. I'm sorry, but constant praise does nothing to improve a product. Manufactures need to hear what's wrong with the product so they can fix it and improve. Did it burn unevenly? Were there any bad tastes to the cigar? Was the cigar blemish free? Did the wrapper split or peel? It's like being friends with someone. A real friend isn't affraid to tell you that you stink and need a shower, but will still go out and have a beer with you.

and not to beat a dead horse on my own point, but when I see a review that says "there is spice in this cigar", my immediate reaction is "what spice?!?!?!?" Look at this and tell me how the hell I'm supposed to know what this cigar tastes like when I'm given "spice":
List of culinary herbs and spices - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I may have a review or two floating around the forum with the word spice, but I make a conscious effort to qualify it with additional color... are the notes reflective of cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne, lavender, etc. If the best you can put up is "spice", you're an enthusiast, not an authority.
** Guilty **

But Im assuming that when I say spice it is a hot spice, pepper etc.
I try to say pepper spice, but sometimes leave it off.

Will to be better about it in the future.

BUT I am an amateur reviewer.
and I dont have a Blog.
