I have been thinking about getting a taurus judge with the .410 shells for home defense. The thought of a shotgun revolver just makes me want to get it on principle. It also shoots 45 long colts which are nothing to sneeze at either.

I just remeber buying a box of snake shot for my .22 and my dad, flipped out. Only in Alabama could 13 year old buy ammo.

That is true, I was always told that the "rat shot" or "snake shot" was bad for a .22. Makes since if you open one up, looks like sandblasting material the beeds are so small. Check out this link on the judge though, its a hell of a cannon!

No, please don't. The Judge is nothing but a gimmick. The .410 is good for nothing but blasting snakes and cardboard. It's only useful in .45 Colt, and in that case... you might as well just have bought some other quality handgun in a more common caliber.

If you want one for fun, that's different. If it's for home defense, stay away.

I use a springfield 1911 in my night stand and Mossberg Tactical 500 downstairs. They work and I keep a cheap ass 9mm in my car so if it gets stolen no biggie.

I'm with the short, maneuverable shotgun if you can't coin up for a proper hand cannon. If you can make them yourself or have somebody make them, load it with rocksalt in the first round, followed by XX buck in the second and subsequent rounds. Chances are, whoever you are defending your home from is going to be long gone after the rocksalt, and you didn't have to kill anyone. Living with the fact that you killed somebody is no fun, even if you were in the right. Which ever choice you make, just make certain that you're better trained in the employment your weapon than you are in the employment of your vehicle. Cars can be replaced......your kids, not so much. My $.02

You guys in the hat can have shotguns with shorter barrels than the ATF allows here (w/o a stamp).

Depends on how your house is consturtced, laid out, are there others in the house. Need to answer before suggesting a weapon.

I would choose a different direction if you are worried about portability, ease of use, concealable traits (in a drawer rather than under bed or closet), and limited penetration through walls or intended target.

What I would suggest is a .410 pistol, great control recoil, pattern spread and stopping ability.

Any 12 gauge will do, just rack a round. Plus you can make the thing look sick for not that much money, one of my favorites is Mossberg.

Home defence in the uk is to leave your car keys on the hall unit. They nick the car a nd leave the rest alone. you get a new motor (and front door) off your insurance company. Would love to be able to defend my home properly ...

^This. It has been upheld in court a few times that a shotgun racking is an audible warning and that anyone left in the room afterwards is fair game.

Besides, a 12 guage with birdshot is less likely to penetrate walls and travel to neighbors, even in an apartment. It is still plenty enough to do the job. The last thing you need in addition to defending yourself against the perp's family is an unrelated involuntary manslaughter charge for taking out a neighbor.

Interesting info for sure, but please do not count on it deterring anyone strung out on meth from breaking down your front door. Fear goes right out the window there.
