Is that where the advertising conspiracy comes in ??

I've tried one Warlock... I have a couple more in my humi. I couldn't smoke 1/3 of it... honestly. I had heard good things about them... but wow, that one I had was NOT it.

Warlock??? Proof positive that that magazine is not worth my money.

EDIT: Also, I still don't understand why the list isn't limited to cigars that were brand new releases in that calendar year.

Why? Because then you really couldn't include CC's at all as other the EL's and such they maybe release 3 cigars a year. Also I think then it would put too much emphasis on new or EL cigars. Many here complain about too many new releases already never mind the average consumer that walks into a B&M CA in hand. Gotta give people a chance at finding the sticks not quite like the VOR last year.

where do you draw the line? if you don't have a time frame, then you could do a list of the best cigars of 2011 that are all 40 year old dunhill and davidoffs?

Well, I think it would make more sense than what they currently do. If it is the best 25 of what is out there....then it falls short. They wouldn't be able to smoke something from every brand, vitola and year to truly create the list.

Otherwise, call it "the 25 best (first third of) cigars of what we chose to review this year".

I totally understand what you're getting at. Why not a Top 10 of this years releases that is separate of their Top 25 of XXXX.

Think they try to stick with what is available at the time. And as much as some of us may have access to Dunhills and Davi's not going to say most will. There is no way everyone will be happy with their format but I think the intent is the 25 best cigars smoked by them. With the # of new releases out every year and depending on how small and hard to find they may be you could spend the whole year just sampling new cigars. I may not be willing to even try some of the cigars that make the list, may not like the way they test but all in all can't come up with a way that would keep everyone happy. I am always interestested to see what comes up on the list eveen if I dissagree with 80% of it. Just goes back to the best and worst smoke threads here and how many cigars overlapped.

Regarding the Warlock, what bothers me is what they wrote about it...

"It has the edgy look of many a hot boutique cigar brand. Regardless of the image, the cigars are delicious."

Apparently, boutique cigars are typically not delicious to CA. Wow, my palette is totally off.

I asked Savona if they were serious, on Twitter. I said it was a it early for an April Fool's joke. He told me it was tastey, and did well in their tests.

ummmmm... riiiiiiiiiiiiight. Did they test them on squirrels?

You misread that. They mean that the faux-boutique image doesn't indicate good or bad taste. Marketing aside, they thought the cigar tasted good.

Viaje had CA's #1 cigar last year and they love Illusione, so obviously they don't think boutique cigars taste bad.

The Warlock to me is simply proof of 2 things: The advertising conspiracy and that smoking only the first 1/2 to 1 inch of a cigar is NOT the way to make a top 25. I seriously almost crashed my car driving to work when I saw that this morning.
