Hello all. It seems as though many people are always talking about different ways to store cigars, but I have a question that I have not seen answered as of yet, which is...Since Boveda packs are great for RH but only last a few months, will a combination of gels AND Boveda packs still perform well in the RH dept. and last longer? If yes, what combination would you suggest for a coolidor containing roughly 15-20 boxes? Thank you everyone.

Bovedas are great for smaller humidors. In the case of a cooler, beads are the preferred and IMO best route.

I know a lot of people, like myself, are against the gel. To make the Boveda packs last longer, just recharge them. Throw 4 or 5 or however many bovedas it takes to control your RH into a cooler and when they dry up put new ones in. Take the old ones and put them into a tupperware container with a small jar of distilled water. Put that tupperware into a ziplock bag. Let that sit in a warm area for a few months and they will be as good as new (or very close).

Using Bovedas with the above method in a cycle of 3 would have your rh perfect all year. In all honesty though, it is much easier to just buck up and buy the beads now.

yup. just switched (switching?) over to heartfleat beads now, and they are all that they are lauded to be. and, as they are renewable and NOT expendable, it goes as a long term investment. win.

bovedas are great, and work as a back up plan, or for a portable solution. but beads are the way to go, man!

Bovedas when used with beads or gel jars are a perfect combo. We all know that the Bovedas are not refillable, but the jars and beads are. so you just make sure that your gel or beads get used as instructed. The Bovedas are your insurance policy in case your other media gets too dry, or even too wet.

This is exactly what I do.

We all know bovedas are not refillable? I have recharged maybe 50 or 60 packets for myself and others and I know plenty of people that have done the same.

+1 I also use beads for my coolidors... works great. I use the Boveda as insurance in the coolidors with beads (with same RH) to make me feel secure since I'm always on the road, but I'm not sure they are actually necessary.

I don't know if it's as reliable in a coolidor as a wineador but kitty litter works amazing for keeping the RH rock solid.
Ok I don't get why people would trust kitty litter to humidify potentially thousands of dollars worth of cigars when beads are more than affordable. I understand you can train the litter but I just can't imagine trusting that much money for something designed for cat feces.

I second this. The beads are cheap as hell.

I use Boveda in conjunction with my heartfelt beads in the winter. A bit of insurance when I forget to check the beads. Summer not an issue as I can go weeks without re-charging in the climate here.

Never had a problem with KL in the past when I used cooledors. I used KL in two 180s and beads in the othe three. Both worked fine. The KL was a gift from a wise old BOTL, Headbanger, the king of KL.

To answer your question, I guess at a certain age you stop overthinking things and realize that a cigar is really just a cigar. They are pretty forgiving.

Once I set up my cabinet with an accumonitor I became a very happy camper Set and walk away.

I just recently switched from just beads to a combination of bovedas and beads. Makes recharging the beads much easier, cause really don't have to be so accurate. If I'm over the boveda will absorb the extra and if I'm under the boveda is there to cover the slack. really helps keep the RH steady when we get crazy freeze warnings in the winter.
