I met a buddy for a cigar in Santa Monica last week. Sort of a last minute thing, so we had no cutters/lighters...I figured the lounge would have all that anyway.

After purchasing, the guy there asked if we wanted the cigars cut ("yes. please"), and he proceeded to cut right through the cello on my buddy's Jaime Garcia!

My first initial gut feeling was ...WRONG!

There's so many ways that this was not a good idea...

Small piece of plastic embedded in the cigar
A dull blade could just mash the cello into the cigar, destroying the cap
The cello could shift against the wrapper, causing an erratic, uneven cut

I dunno....Just thought is was NOT proper cigar cutting etiquette! What do you guys think?

done it plenty of times, and never had an issue. if i have a buddy who smokes occasionally, it is good to set them up without handling something that they are, in turn, putting into their pie hole. like a straw in a drink, served with the last bit of paper on it still?

i would say most places would gladly offer you a cutter for you yourself to use. also, you have every right to inspect their work: if they boned it, they replace it.

i guess the most important thing would be, did it smoke well?

A good point that I did not even think of.

I've had cigar shop owners do it numerous times. Has never really bothered me--I think often they're doing it for the sanitary reasons mentioned.

Different hands. There is no reason to ever cut thru cello.... IMO.

Since working at a shop, I am surprised at how many customers ask for this to be done. It doesn't really bother me.

Plenty of places will do it to also leave the cello on the cigars in order for the cello to continue being there for protection.

This is a common practice if you have a cutter that is kind of dull...cutting through the cello actually gives a dull cutter enough material to make a better cut. If it was a B&M my question is why don't they use a better cutter for their patrons instead of using a POS and then have to make do with it? I always bring my own cutter and lighter as I've seen people suck on the end of their cigars and then use the B&M's cutters with some guys spit all over it...not for me.

There is a shop in phx that I would have a smoke in from time to time and the owner would always clip cigars through the cello. He never ruined a stick but I did find it odd.

I saw a customer at my local shop do this on Saturday. It was a good smoke too... MF I think. He just picked up the guillotine cutter on the counter, snipped through the cello, and walked out the door. I've never personally done it... but I've never deliberately put any thought into it on why I do not. :)

Have heard that a thousand times but wonder why people will wash their hands before a meal...why people use purell...etc. Cutting through cello makes no sense to me as well but people do things for a hundred different reasons....I'll sleep ok as long as I dont continue to wonder what the answer is.

We used to do something like this back when I worked at a shop...

When cutting a cigar for a patron we'd snip the end of the cello to expose the cap, pinch down by the foot so that the cap of the cigar would pop up through the clipping, then cut the cigar and drop it back down into the cello (now open at both ends).

We did it to give the appearance of attention to hygiene. Of course, it was also fine for patrons to pick up and fondle cigars to check for knots or soft spots (not to mention people putting them on or near their face to smell them) - and if we really sticklers for hygiene, I'm sure we woulda put the kibosh on that sorta thing.

But yeah, to get back to the OP, I've never seen anyone cut use a cutter to cut through the cello, but I can't really imagine that it'd cause a problem with a good cutter and a shopkeep that knows wtf he's doing. I mean, if he botches the job, it's incumbent on him to replace the stick.

Maybe the guy had a formative experience with scissors when he was younger - who knows?!
