So while on vacation a buddy and I went night fishing.

He went a little before me as I spent a little extra time w\ my kids.

I got to the beach and I offered him a cigar and he said - Umm Maybe - as I know he doesnt smoke much.
I asked him how the bugs were as there was lots of activity and he said he loaded up on bug spray but forgot to bring it for me.

I lit my cigar and started to fish.

about 10 minutes later he aske me how the bugs were for me.
I said - not bothering me at all!

He asked for that cigar!

So I will definately say that a Woam wards off bugs.
As soon as I finished the Woam - I got ATTACKED by nats / black flies etc.
So I was forced to light up a BOTL 12 - No more bugs!

I had that until I finished fishing!
I will definately bring cigars to buggy events from here on out!

You know I was smoking one last night, and thinking the same thing. Im curious how valid this really is.

It seems any time ive got one lit, that im not getting attacked. Now I might around my Ankles or something every now and then, but really not at all a problem when smoking a stick.

Id be curious if the brothers have similar experiences.

This is the experience I have had. In fact I started smoking cigars many years ago to keep the bugs away on the golf course.

When we had all the fires here in Colorado, one of the good things was there were no bugs.

I don't know, maybe it only works with a certain kind of bugs.

I tried that couple of nights ago - lit one up on the terrace. Got bitten all over.

Skeeters up here in NH don't care one wit about smoke. Hell, I have those Thermacell units running on my deck and it works but some still get through. I'd pass out from blood loss before the nicotine did its thing if it wasn't for the combo of the Thermacells and the Mosquito Magnet.

San Diegan bugs seem to be as up-ity as the people around here when it comes to cigar smoke. Rarely do I get approached while smoking, regardless.

Not sure about the pest insects, but last summer I was convinced cigar smoke attracted butterflies. They always seemed to come around when I smoked, regardless of my location, and even had a few land on me. Haven't noticed it this year.

Same here, i have'nt been able to enjoy a cigar out back in about 3 weeks. The tiger mosquitoes have been so bad that even when i step out side really quick to get something i get nailed t least 3 times. I've sprayed my entire backyard twice this summer, I have a 1 1/2 acre black light bug zapper, couple thermacell lanterns and about 3 cutter candles in the immediate area where I smoke. Not once has the cigar smoke helped keep them away. Oh, and I also hung up a bat house in hope to get some tenants so they can feed upon those ahole mosquitoes, hopefully by next year its inhabited Its been so bad that i finally called the county mosquito control and they are coming this week to spray my backyard and hopefully my neighbors. We'll see if that helps, it better.

Seems to depend on the cigar i'm smoking. Some work better than others. Maybe something in the amount of smoke or the overall smell...have to start keeping a list. Would be a great LE cigar...Throne's Certain Death 2012 Limitada.

I really like those bug coil things you burn in a ceramic dish (Off or Cutter brand I believe). They can stink but work very well in a small area.

I find that smoking a strong cigar does reduce the number of bugs that swirl ahead my big bald head. I also find that it is most effective if i keep the cigar mostly in my mouth and I smoke on the faster side... Cigars that produce a lot of smoke imo are the most effective, but nothing beats DEET imo.
