I'm a fan of simple bands and boxes. LP, Illusione and Tats have my favorite bands. What I don't like are the bands that are too "busy": too big, too much design, etc. Also, I can't stand bands that try to look classy by using gold coloring, but they're too cheap to get it right!

No contest. Hands down, GH STK Zulu's. If red and tourquoise bands that cover almost entire cigar weren't bad enough, the boxes were offensive to many, distasteful to most and downright f'd up to me. Kid with AK47 on the lid was absolutely stupid. Call it art, if you want - but put it on a museum wall....not on a cigar box.

Totally forgot about the Gran Habanos, one of the worst indeed

I have a pet peeve with unfriendly boxes. Viaje wins this award hands down - the Late Harvest (looks great, endangers cigars unless you dismantle it) and H&H (a crowbar to open a cigar box?) are both unfun as a consumer and retailer. I'mn also not a fan of the paper wraps unless done really well - Origens do this well. They stand paper sleeves in wooden boxes and provide the dog food string on top.

I may be more of a sucker for a pretty box than many, but I'd rather see a plain box than a troublesome one

I would have to say anything in paper wrapping.
Uzi
Ratzilla
Tenderloin
(dont know if the chop was in paper)
I know it should defer costs, but I dont really see it in the final $.
also I feel that the smokes are compromised just sitting in their paper w\ no protection!

Poor little defenseless Ratzillas.

Ok onto bands.
Im not really that picky!
But
Unbanded cigars tick me off!
but at the same time
a band just telling you who the manufacturer is when there are many different cigars in that line.
-Fuente - standard line banding is blurred somewhat depending on when you got the cigar between sungrown, rosado etc.
-Tat brown bands
-I also dont like the Tat band w\ the typewitten letting in the oval

What I do like is the Illusione bands simple and you know exactly what your are getting.
Most of the LP banding
Opus X bands - very nice

Oh and of course any two banded cigar - yeah thats for me ;)

But what I dislike most about bands is when the Pectin is overused and glues the band to the wrapper!

Lot of interesting replies... forgive me for not including my own list and it is a long one, with many of the same ones already mentioned, but it would be a douche thing for me to be publicly critical of another cigar company in a public forum. Plus when it comes to the aesthetics of any design it really is a personal preference.

In general:

I personally don't like:

- Things that look cheap or fake.
- Things that are over designed.
- Things that are not balanced - design, text, whatever - this really puts me into OCD overdrive.
- Box designs that are impractical, not stackable and/or provide inadequate protection for the cigar.

I personally like:

- Simple, clean lines.
- Very sparing use of "bling" - a less is more approach
- Classic, Historic, Distressed, Rustic and/or Vintage designs.
- Subdued, cold colors typically.
- Well written copy (fwiw, imo very few people can do this well... much easier to find a talented artist than author)
- Overall Understated, but with very close attention to seemingly minor details.

When done right, packaging can not only echo the product it contains, but can reinforce its qualities and enhance the experience of their enjoyment imo.

I do have to say that the (one) LP no.9 sitting in my humi is the damn sexiest lookin cigar ive ever seen. Its clean, label is simple, but perfectly graphed. Its just the damn sexiest thing in there. Im refraining from smoking it till I get more (one of these days)

Prior to me receiving my coveted LP9, the best lookin thing I had in there was the OpusX label. I like it cause its crazy lookin, and makes me think its worthy of my Arkansas Tax purchase of a 4 million dollar cigar...

But to counter act that, (I dont have one, but plan to get one) I really really like the look of the La Duana (spelling?) cigar.

my 2 cents...

If I may make a suggestion: I <3 me some LP 9s. I'm smoking one right this instant as a matter of fact. I've gone through several boxes.

As these babies age, their flavor profile changes a lot. New and old are both delicious, but they are entirely different smokes. If you're going to/have been resting that one for awhile, do yourself a favor and before you smoke it, go to a B&M and get a newer one as well. I'd personally suggest smoking the new one first, and the well rested one the next day. Night and day difference. The new one will have a lot of ooomph to it. The older one will be like inhaling chocolatey silk.

Thread jack off.

San Cristobal bands are hideous!

Sorry to bring this up again, but why was the decision made to have the "papas fritas" on the bands in print font instead of the awesome LP handwritten font? Don't know why I care so much, since it doesn't effect the cigar itself...probably because the LP bands are my favorite out of any others and hate to see the change :dunno:

Because I wanted it to be typeface.

Like I said before, packaging conveys a message - I wanted the Papas Fritas band to convey that it is not exactly the same product, that is not as sophisticated or refined as the other LPs. You will note the band itself is much simpler - no gold, bronze, sterling, - in fact the Liga lion on the back is just a non-embossed, white (i.e., color of the paper) knock-out.

Making the band as elegant as the others imo would not be truthful branding of the product.

So if you don't like it, blame me. :>

Steve, lol, thanks for the response. I understand. I think they still look nice (better than most out there) and still can't wait to get my grubby little mitts on some of them!!

Camacho Liberty has great banding, but the coffins with their cheap, unreadable gold-leaf handwriting are the worst (2012 is especially bad). The lead suitcase the coffins come in is unmanageable. The box takes up half my cooler - or used to- I buy a box every year and immediately get rid of the coffins and the box.

I'm glad the 601 Blues swicted back (or close to) the old bands. I always have some on hand and was getting tired of removing those gawd awful bands before lighting up. :ccool:
