I've smoked a couple of cigars with a closed foot and I'm not sure I get it. By the time I'm done lighting the cigar, the wrapper covering the foot is already ash. So what is the point of having it there?

Thought is to taste the leaf before lighting.... But I like to evenly toast the foot so I have the same problem and the same thought when I smoke one

I am lost as well, especially the super long closed foot. Wolfie was one of my first issues with a longer closed foot, just couldn't quite wrap my head around it. Great cigar though!

Wolfie was a rough foot, a closed foot has the wrapper cover the end of the foot as well as the head.

I'm also a sucker for a closed foot mainly for appearance reasons. I just think it looks nice. Thought the rough foot was called a shag-foot? Which I also think are cool sometimes, but that summerfest torp was just outlandish!! lol still enjoyed lighting it after snipping a little of it.

I agree with what's been said before, you can really get a taste of just the wrapper if you puff while lighting. It can be a very interesting thing, but probably mostly for aesthetics.

I'm with the "yea's" on this one, i think they look sexy, you can get a great flavor blast, and i have yet to have damage to a closed foot cigar. Although my own fault, I'm sure, i have had a few cigars with slight damage to the foot. This is alleviated with the closed foot.

Viaje seems to really be jumping on this concept. Everything from the super shoots to the SnB ? Release in 2010 and many other blends. Personally, i like the cap-like closed foot (Zombie) to the rough closed foot (first two specifically mentioned cigars)

There's my $0.025 - too wordy to just be 2 cents :D

maybe another guess...if you were to light with a closed foot, i think it would block any hot air travelling through the cigar while lighting which evaporates the very volatile aromatics, so when you puff you are tasting aromatics that you wouldnt normally taste? maybe thats the reason, combined with the actual wrapper/binder itself, that gives a closed foot a nice unusual taste. dunno, just spitballin':dunno:

I like the look of the closed foot, but it doesn't add anything to my smoking experience. If all cigars came with a closed foot, I'd probably find an open foot more interesting!

I always thought that it was to help you achieve an even light since you could just light a little of the wrapper and puff away until the burn spread out. Takes away any possible charring or other lighting problems. You get immediate taste.

Most manufacturers will tell you it's for aesthetics...just like the pigttails. It neither robs or influences the cigar when lit as when one draws on a closed end cigar the wrapper burns first and then the smoke is drawn up through the rest of the cigar. A lot of traditionalists will light the cigar first before ever taking a draw ( they test draw first to ensure that it isn't plugged ) and then use the heat from the flame to actually light the end.
