Hi guys, I having a problem now with my RH I live in Malaysia and the average humidity here are around 70-80 . Recently I just bought a thermoelectric type wine chiller ( 20"D x 13"w x 33" H )and I bought 20 unit of 65% bovedapak and 2 pound of 65% heartfelt beads to place around my wineador but my RH doesn't get close to 65% they always stay at 60% or below. Whenever I open my wineador the RH rush up to 70++ and after 15 minute they slowly go back to 63-65% after few hours the drop back to 60 or below . Btw I have around 200 sticks of cigar in there. And I bought a normal digital thermo meter. Do I need more beads? FYI there is no cedar lining only original factory cigar box.

Hi Wayne,

Welcome to BOTL. Be sure and stop on over to the introductions forum and introduce yourself when you get a chance.

I'm not sure if you did this or not but my first thought would be that your hygrometer more than likely needs to be calibrated. 20 Boveda packs and 2 pounds of beads should be more than enough to get your humidity to 65% so it may just be that your hygrometer is reading incorrectly.

The only other issue that I can think of is that you may have the temperature set too low in the winedor which is making the unit run too much and is drying things out.

Hi guys, I do spray my beads with distilled water , and I set my temperature at 18 Celsius ( maximum they can go ) I use to store my cigar in a Tupperware but now my collection are getting bigger so I decide to get a wine chiller but now I having this humidity problem. Btw I put those beads in a women socks and place them around wine chiller.. Hmmm maybe I will get another digital hydro meter and monitor the reading

I have a wineador. I had tons of issues regulating RH with heartfelt. I switched to unscented silica kitty litter and have not looked back since. With a computer fan wired inside for constant air circulation, mine stays at 67-70 RH year round.

I think that you may have missed the point of my original reply. Your hygrometer needs to be calibrated every so often to make sure that it is giving you the correct reading. If your hygromter is not calibrated it may be giving you an incorrect reading.

I would suggest googling "salt test calibration" for more detailed information. You can perform your own salt test or buy a Boveda calibration kit to help you calibrate it.

With your set-up I honestly think your hygrometer needs to be calibrated as rupe suggested. Did you just use it out of the box? If so you should either get a boveda calibration kit or go the route that's free the salt test.

Yes I use it out from the box and I did google about salt test. Hmmm.. Maybe is my meter problem I guess.. Will get an calibrate-able meter
ASAP anyway thanks guy!

I live in Orlando FL which has similar humidity and I struggle to keep my RH below 66%.
I have to microwave my KL every few weeks to get rid of excess moisture.

I agree that your hygrometer might be off a little.
What is the ambient temperature outside of the wine cooler?
If it's 90+ degrees and your wine cooler is constantly running to keep it at 64, that might be part of the problem. Like Rupe said if the wine cooler is constantly running, it will drop the RH. I observe this frequently with my setup.
After a few weeks it should stabilize and be able to remain pretty consistent through.

If you test the hygrometer and it turns out that you do need to bring the RH up. Take a shallow bowl or dish, place a paper towel in it and pour some distilled water in the bowl.
This can bring the RH up pretty quickly.
I would not recommend spraying water on your beads.

My guess is that your unit is running too much. If your wine fridge is running, its going to suck all of the moisture out if the air. What is the ambient temperature in your house and do you have an ETC?

This has been my experience as well. Make sure the unit is in a cooler spot in your home. Try using an ETC or at least a timer on your outlet to keep it from running 24/7

Hmmm.. Means I have to get a timer for my winecooler, I shouldn't run my wine cooler for 24/7? Yea.. It's the coolest spot for it.. I thought thermoelectric winecooler doesn't suck out moisture. May I know what is ETC? And the ambient in my house are around 26-29. It's 365days summer in my country

+1 on testing and calibrating the hygrometer.

Also, if you haven't already, I would recommend plugging the drain hole. I taped over mine with some electrical tape and put a bag of beads over it to absorb any condensation that might occur. If you have any empty (wood) cigar boxes you could put those in your wineador as well to help stabilize the humidity.

Electronic temperature control. It will make it so the unit only turns on when it hits a certain temperature, say 70 degrees Fahrenheit or so or where ever you set it at. And thermoelectric units most definitely suck out moisture.

Honestly, I didn't have much luck with my unit until the ambient temperature in my house stopped going above 75. Any higher than that and the unit would run far too much and I couldn't stabilize rh.

Good luck. :)

Hmmm from what I search in Internet they said thermorelectric wine cooler wouldn't suck out moisture.. But the cold can bring down humidity.. Correct me if I'm wrong

Guy I have to say, you are making the problems with winecoolers into bigger than need be.
1, are you running the wine cooler to act as a temp controlled unit? Thermoelectric wine coolers don't remove air but it does cool the air, the cooler the air you will notice a drop in your humidity, thus needing more humidification. Either leave it on or off don't play with it every day and you don't need an ETC in you unit. Just a calibrated hydro and two large diameter cooling fans to stir the air from time to time.
2. Pick one form of humidification, I went with the beads 65% and I bought about a pound. The fans will move the air around the box maintaining even humidity top to bottom.
Ii kept my wine cooler at 65% humidy and 65 degree F. All year round. After turning the cooling on it will take a couple of days to restabalize the humidity to the lower temp. Buy not to worry the boxes themseves will help keep the actual humidty to the cigars at the right level.

I watched the rh in my unit drop significantly whenever the unit kicked on and before the temp in the unit decreased at all.

Yes I use it as cooling unit because in my country the temperature are way to high for cigars. No I don't have any cooling fans to stir the air time to time, I already do a test with my hydro meter with a pack of 72% boveda after 8 hours my hydrometer reading is 71% so I believe my hydrometer accuracy are around +/- 1%

Do you run your wine cooler for 24/7/365? It's already a week my humidity dropping 1% day by day. The lowest was 56% so far...
