Leaving them shut.. even sealed is perfectly fine. Personally I open every box for inspection (as opposed to leaving sealed) then shut them for storage. Whenever I happen to smoke something from that box I inspect the rest while I have it out. Never had any problems.

If i get a box already cracked, I'll open it to inspect and pull out one to try ROTT, if the box is sealed and from a source I trust (and I have others to smoke of that type) I'll leave it sealed and just toss it in.

I thought so but I wasn`t sure. Thank you. Seems like if they are plastic wrapped the humidity can`t get in. I opened all Mine but wasn't sure if they breath or not in the box.
keep in mind, there's plastic, then there's plastic. the cello that some boxes are sealed in is vapor-porous, it just slows the exchange down some. which is VERY good for long term, actually. but if that wrapping was actually a good seal for humidity, B&M's wouldn't have to humidify their back stock, right?

in the end, your call. in all honesty, i have a problem with opening most of my boxes and giggling over them, from time to time. pretty sure that's just me, though...

I just have to say this may have been the best line I have heard in awhile. Thank you for that Java.

To stay away from Thread Jacking...it is personal preference but I am a fan of opening the box up and just giving a nice inspection.

Cheers,
JM

Depends on how soon you want to smoke them.

If they're going to have a long rest, they can stay closed. Cigar boxes, even wrapped in cello, allow moisture migration, so they will eventually come to equilibrium with the internal relative humidity of your humidor. But the more wrapped they are, the more slowly this happens. Some CC aficionados actually wrap their boxes in Saran Wrap, for slow aging over many years.

If you're going to smoke them any time soon, the cigars' moisture content will reach your target level faster if the box is cracked open.

In any case, I highly recommend you freeze boxes the moment they come in the door, then open and inspect, and then store according to your preference. If you don't inspect, and there's a beetle infestation, cracked wrappers, mold, etc. your vendor is not likely to exchange your cigars a year later, when you notice the problem.

I open all of my boxes to sniff. There's no better smell than the first whiff of a new box (especially if they are naked, kinda like a woman) :)
