Anyone in one? Is it worth the price for the sticks you are receiving?

I was in CIs a while back and it wasn't that bad for the price. Looking to maybe find another retailer that does it or maybe jump back on theirs.

I've thought about it, but I wouldn't want to get something I wouldn't want to smoke. I don't mind a small sampler or a stick or two, but, at this point, there are a few things I would want to make sure I spend my money on. Gotta make the budget go as far as it can on what I want.

Personally I have never thought these were worth it from what I have heard. But that is just me and my preferences, if you typically enjoy the sticks that are included in their cigar of the month then it is probably a good deal.

Is there a reason you are looking to join one? perhaps some sticks you are looking to try, if so maybe myself or some of the other brothers here might be able to help you out?

I've never been in one but the general consensus seems to be that you get a lot of filler sticks and stuff the retailer can't move. Personally I'd rather just take the money and go pick a couple new sticks from my B&M every month. Just my $0.02

I've never been in one so I can't comment, but my personal opinion is that I rather take the money and just purchase a couple of sticks each month that I'm interested in trying rather than someone else making the decision for me.

Yeah those work for people justt getting into smoking and maybe not knowing what they like or just want a no brainer set and forget way to fill their humidor. They seem to be set right around 5/6 bux a stick. I did it for maybe 2 or 3 months and but then felt that I could take that 30 bucks and just buy what I wanna try or what's been suggested by smokers I trust instead of having them pick for me. I did discover a couple good inexpensive dailies but again nothing a trusted botl couldn't/wouldn't steer me to.

my wife singed me up for one of these as a Christmas present, I cant say that ive received anything bad, i think i could have made better use of the same amount of money though. On the plus side ive gotten a few sticks that i would have purchased other wise.

I was part of Empire Cigars' Cigar of the Month club for a while and enjoyed the selection sent:
http://www.empirecigars.net/club.html

They sent mostly premium-like stuff with 1 or 2 recognizable budget sticks each month.

I agree that doing an ISO or BOTL trade can be probably more fun...

I'd see CI sending a bunch of stuff they couldn't sell. Then again I've never bought cigars from an online retailer at all so who am I to judge. What's the general consensus on these clubs?

I belong to the Holt's cigar of the month club and have enjoyed it. You will receive some quality cigars a few fillers. Shipped priority mail with humidity control.

I would rather use the money to pick the stix myself, but to a noob, I can see this being a good way to try some different stuff.

I was in Cigar.com's Cigar of the Month ("COM") club for a year, from Dec 2010 to Dec 2011 for a total of 13 shipments. I emailed them to cancel and included the following letter to provide some feedback and posted it to BOTL at the same time.

Cigar.com COM Club:

Well, it's been a year and I've learned a lot; but I think it's time to bid farewell to the Cigar of the Month club. Please accept this email as cancellation of my Cigar of the Month club membership effective immediately.

Some feedback:

PROS:
• I got some cigars I normally wouldn't even try out which was a nice change of pace.
• The newsletter is a great addition, and I like learning about the sticks being selected. It is very, very well written.
• Over the course of the year there were a few months that a bonus was included; I recall a couple of extra sticks, and a cutter once which is very nice and unexpected. {I’ve since reviewed my newsletters and found I received 5 extra sticks and 1 cutter over the year.}
• $29.95/month is a fair price for the sticks and especially for the newsletter.

CONS:
• Not enough sticks from different makers. Gurkha, Cohiba, and a few others seem to be on constant rotation. Once I received the same Gurkha cigar twice in 3 months.
• The COM doesn’t seem to support the catalog and vice versa. There were several times that your catalog "cover story" touted a stick that I would be interested to try, but then the COM was the same old, same old.
• No new releases. I can understand limited stock initially, so the COM isn’t the newest thing, but I would hope in a couple of months then the new sticks get into rotation.
Please don’t misunderstand me; I am not expecting limited edition $20+ cigars in the COM. The cover story stick I’m referencing is selling for ~$2, and the new release I’ve mentioned is ~$4. I don’t expect $60 worth of cigars for my $30/month price.
• Same sizes. Most of the sticks are Churchills which I can see some people liking, feeling they are getting more stick for the money, so this is really a personal preference. I don't often have time to smoke a Churchill size and (like many smokers I think) smoke outside, so if the weather isn't great you are fighting for 2+ hours trying to enjoy your new cigar. Some different sizes and especially different vitolas would be a great addition. Maybe Churchills in the summer, Robustos in winter?
• $3.95/month s&h is a real drag. Other clubs give you free s&h after the first month. $4 may not seem like a lot, but it takes a fair price and pushes it to the point where I’m thinking of spending my money elsewhere.
• I’ve been with the club for just over a year now; there was no anniversary acknowledgement, bonus, extra coupon for the catalog, nothing. You sent me a coupon for my birthday (the same 10% I was getting off for the COM club and they wouldn’t stack) but it was the thought that counts.

Final thoughts:
• The 10% off other orders is a nice bonus....if you have the sticks I want to order. You have been "on order" since one of my favorites (I tried at a local B&M) came out, I was hoping to buy a box but I can't keep paying $34 per month to save $14 on a box that you haven't gotten in for months.
• Your customer service is GREAT. I cannot say enough about the people who I've spoken with over the phone and corresponded with in email. Every single person was professional and really seemed to like and care about what they were doing.
Thanks for everything!

Sincerely,

Monsterdg

My wife enrolled me in Thompsons cigar of the month club a while back (a few years) as a present for being a good boy and doing something nice for her (I honestly cant remember what it was that I did at this point).. it was just the 3 month "trial" membership...

my thoughts were similar to Tims... the dollar value was there.. I didnt fell ripped off or anything at all.. and I got a bunch of stuff that I probably would have never tried on my own.. and they also provided a well put together newsletter that gave descriptions/write ups on each stick in that months package.. etc..

but...

1) I received mostly yard gars, from the "big" companies (general, altadis, etc..).. the "boutique" sticks were from the biggest/most common manufacturers as well (rocky, ghurka, CAO, etc.. (stuff you can get at any B&M in the country..)...

2) I received stuff that for the most part wasnt to my taste...

It probably would have been a very good thing for a "beginner"... they sent a pretty wide variety of sticks, both in size/vitola, and in blend, as well as country of origin.. I ended up with everything from churchills to coronas.. connecticut to maduro... dominicans, hondurans, and nicaraguans, etc..etc.. it would have been a good way to experience a whole lot of stuff if I didnt already have predisposed opinions on most of it..

but at the point I started receiving boxes.. I was already past the point where I would have gotten a whole lot of value from it..

From reading everyone comments it seems like it's not worth it anymore to join a COM Club. Seems to be geared more towards the person just getting into cigar smoking.

Thanks everyone for your opinions and comments.

Thanks javajunkie for the referral to the NC PIF thread. I'm going to check it out and hopefully I can get in.
