Ok...thank god for this thread. I am out here in Afghan and have had cigars punching me in the balls for almost a week straight. The latest one ( I got as close to yakking as one can get without actually doing so ) was an Undercrown. Panicked, started chugging water and ate some chips...close call. Never knew about the sugar thing. But being out here calls for many empty stomach times as well as dehydration. Guess I haven't become the bitch I thought I had lol.
No, your still a pussy! Lol. Just kiddin'. Thanks for your service, keep your head down and get home safe!

Weak stomach or not. I really think the topic was to help people who might not react well to too much vitamin N. If it doesn't apply to you don't cut into other people it may apply to.

End rant

I am guessing the heat and hydration has a lot to do with it man.

Yeah that is what I am gathering from this as well Hosh. I did that packet of sugar trick last night...worked like a charm. So should be smooth sailing from here on. @ Agent, I genuinely appreciate your defense and see how Danger may have come across harsh. The deal there is he is out here in the suck with me in the Stan. We know each other quite well, and in the army busting each other's balls just helps the time go by lol. But again, thank you...that really shows how tight of a brotherhood this is and how newbies are welcomed to it as well. Makes me even more happy to finally be a part of BOTL

Being at elevation in Astan is likely playing a role as well depending on where you are...

For example... When I was working around Jalalabad... At 1800 ft... Never a problem.. When I was in Herat at 3000 feet... Never a problem... But when I would go to Bagram or Kabul to work for a little while (5000+ feet)... I would get the vitamin N nut punch if wasn't a bit more careful and pay more attention...

Once you have been in place for a while and adjust to the elevation everything balances out...

But if you are changing elevation with any frequency at all (going out on patrol.. Going up or down several thousand feet for days at a time.. etc... It will remain a challenge...)

This happened to me once. I didnt know what to do so I dealt with it. but after reading this thread this all makes sense. I tend not to do anything slow so I am always trying to be aware of how fast I am smoking my cigar. I catch myself puffing away like i'm in a Fing race to smoke it. lol I am not sure I could just down a packet of sugar I think I would rather keep a Hersheys bar next to me & a class of Jack Daniels Honey. Has anyone tried the Jack Honey? I don't like regular Jack Daniels but I really enjoy the Jack Honey. It goes down really smooth and has great flavor. The Honey is more of a hint of honey.

Thanks for the pointers.

Jack Honey is nice for those of us who may not be hard core whiskey drinkers...liked it better than Wild Turkey...but goes well with a stick...as far as smoking speed some off color advice i got early on.."you're not sucking a blank you're smoking a cigar...you are allowed to take it out of your mouth..." for what its worth...

Happened to me a couple of times, in my case I was trying to pound through some smokes because I didn't have much time.

I've learned my lesson though.

Also, I second the root beer deal. Perfect match for most smokes.

to re-state what everyone else said. soda or candy bar if it hits you. Staying hydrated and smoking on a full stomach for a full bodied cigar is the best to do. need sugar to counteract vitamin N if it hits

Not sure if someone mentioned this, but being in a well ventilated environment helps too. My first hurling, head spinning experience resulted in inhaling the second hand smoke over a 1 1/2 hour period.

Same here. I've never felt sick smoking outdoors, but the one time I got bit by the nicotine punch was from smoking inside with marginal ventilation with several other people smoking as well. I was also smoking a Cain F and drinking, so that might have played a part in it as well  Needless to say, I learned my lesson.
