How's that work out? I know I can only pick up hand guns in my own state, or have a FFL in another state ship it to a FFL in my own. But now I'm wondering about picking up a shotgun on an upcoming trip. Another issue, is I am flying there and flying back, so how hard is it to ship it back to my house? Would I just go to a shop in that state, and have them ship it to one in mine? Or throw it in a FedEx box and ship it back?

If it's legal for you to own it in your home state, you can buy it out of state and transport it yourself.

That's what was explained to me by people I trust. However, you may want to contact a friendly FFL or one of the ATF hotlines to confirm.

Unless your home state is CA, in that case no one will deal with you...
Home state is MO, so I'm safe on that account.

Transport it myself...I'm assuming I can't fly back with it, so does that mean I could ship it myself through FedEx? I'm going to be in Alaska for a few weeks and the customer told me to bring bear repellant. When the PM explained that line to me, he said "I guess that means a gun" so I figure it's a good time to pick up another toy I'd been wanting ( =

Well it depends on your home state. Typically yes you can buy a shotgun/long gun as they are not considered regulated. If its legal in your home state and the state you're buying in is allowed to sell to non residents you're good. As far as transport airlines typically require a hard locked case and that you declare the contents ahead of time and usually charge a fee for transport.

I'd assume as long as you buy it through the proper channels you could ship it.

People fly with guns all the time for hunting. I bet if you called the airline they'd help you figure it out...

OK shotguns may be different but my buddy and I bought some Henry 44 lever action big boy rifles and his was not right and that's what the company told him after they repair it. Just may be rifles pistols etc. I have no clue, I thought our gun laws in SC were pretty relaxed here.

Yes for them to Ship your buddies long gun to another state it would need to be received by FFL. But if they didnt have to fix it he could've walked out with it and transported. Pistol/regulated would have have to be shipped either way

Bitchen link, thanks man.

That figured out...thoughts on a shot gun? I figure once my 2 weeks of not really needing protection from a bear are done...I'll just need something for the RV when I'm on the road. I like the idea of a pistol grip with a shorter barrel-but I really don't know flying fuckall past what looks neat.
That's strongly personal preference.
I hate shotguns with pistol grips, but many people love them.

Do you prefer semi or pump?
Are there certain loads you want to run?
Will you do anything with it besides RV protection (and the bear trip)?
What kind of sights do you want?
How short of a barrel? Do you plan on turning it into an SBS?

Or the core two questions:
What's your price range?
What do you want to do with it?

regarding flying with it...

this is EASY to do...

It has to be in a hard, lockable case.

Any ammo has to be in a separate, hard, lockable case...

when you check in.. you have to "declare" the shotgun.. the ticket agent will give you a form to fill out that you will put inside the locked case with the shotgun..

then you put it on the conveyor belt.. they load it in the plane.. and you are done...

I travel with firearms domestically several times a year... never a problem at all...

The only thing you need to be "aware" of is what the laws are of your destination location.. the airlines will not be responsible... if you do as described above.. they are going to check your firearm and let you on the plane..

If you are traveling to NYC however.. with a checked pistol for example.. NYPD will likely be waiting for you when you exit JFK (Ive actually seen them do this to unwary/ignorant gun owners)...

Traveling internationally with firearms isnt all that challenging either... some international carriers are easier to work with than others.. but they all have some sort of system in place..

I found Lufthansa to be the most accomidating and easiest to deal with in most cases.. British Air on the other hand has been a total nightmare to deal with (even when the destination is not the UK) in my experience...

on the pistol grip thing....

DONT DO IT...

I would consider a stock/grip combo set up.. but in most cases the ergodynamics of a pistol grip adds significantly more felt recoil.. and does little to add to accuracy or speed..

a shotgun with a pistol grip only is worthless...

shotguns need stocks..
