Which do you all consider to be the better cigars...Rocky Patel The Edge Maduro, or the Olde World Reserve Maduro? I'm considering buying a box of one in robusto size. Thanks.

I wouldn't buy a box of either cigar (unless they were @ $2-3/stick ) but IMHO the Edge Maduro is a better smoke. I'd start with a couple of both and be the the judge though yourself. Both are ok, but also a little one note. The Edge has a bit more sweetness to it which I prefer.

Olde World Reserve in both wrappers is better in my opinion. I also am not a huge fan of Rocky but I do like the Decade and Olde World Reserve in both wrappers.

If you like RP cigars and want to smoke them because you like them, that's cool. Not my preference but it is up to you.

However, if you're coming here for advice about the kind of RP cause you're not sure, I would say there are much much better cigars with better quality tobacco for the price you are going to pay for those. Probably not active now but one site was selling Tatuaje Noella Reservas for about the same price. EPC has some good sticks in that price range. Surrogates and L'atelier can be had for around the same price if you look around.

If you're not sure, absolutely don't buy a box. Buy fivers of each and smoke through those first.

Personally, I used to love both when I first started, but as my palate improved, the chalkiness of the smoke, combined with the dark stains left on my fingers, lips, and teeth, made me go in other directions. I then discovered there are a lot of better cigars for the same price, especially given the OWR's higher price point.

I believe OWRs are being discontinued so be on the look out for some deals. It's been a while since I've had either but I think I prefer the Edge Maduro to the OWR

I guess I am not the only one. LOL Most of my cigar buds feel the same way and just don't buy RP stuff. I used to love his older stuff like the Indian Tabac Super Fuertes and vintage 90/92 but.........

I don't smoke RP stuff so I cant tell you which is better. I can think of better box worthy smokes though but that's just my opinion.

I've smoke a few Olde World Reserves in the past and thought that they were just OK. I refused to smoke anymore after the time that I finished smoking one and rubbed my hand on my white linen shorts. It looked like I just took a nice little shit that happened to dribble down my leg a bit. The stain didn't come out completely either which relegated an $70 pair of shorts to junk pile. Makes one wonder WTF is on these things that create a stain that can't wash out. And I want that in my mouth? Fuck that, I think not.

Never had an Edge Maddy myself, but the Lite isn't bad but maybe a tad inconsistent (what RP stick isn't it seems?) I agree with others that say you should perhaps try some other things and then compare them to your enjoyment of RP. I don't smoke it myself but there are plenty of fans out there and if you enjoy them and can score them for the right price, then hey man, more power to you.

It may not be your palate that has changed. RP has a reputation of bringing out a great new blend, getting it to sell well, and then cheapening the blend. Maybe that's real or maybe it's Memorex, but it sure has been my experience with RP's. When the Edge first came out, that original release was spectacular, and I smoked a LOT of boxes of them, mostly in the maduro. Then they started to taste lousy. Same thing with the Edge Sumatra. Maybe the blends didn't really change and it's just my palate that has. Then again, when money talks...

I would say if you like the Edge, buy them. It's your money and don't let anyone scare you off. I think everyone starts with Rocky Patel and then realizes how terrible they are. I know I did as did most of my cigar club buddies. They seem pretty good until you really start smoking good cigars. I personally prefer the H. Upmann Legacy for $99 a box. It's a great smoke at a very good price point. Beats the heck out of the Edge.

I don't think think anyone is trying to scare him off. I think everyone just wants him to make an informed purchase. Every cigar maker has issues with things, but RP seems to have more. I, along with several others, wanted to point out that their maduro wrappers leave stains everywhere. It's said that they color their wrappers to make them look more appealing and "maduro-y." Others have pointed out issues with inconsistency or other problems.

I feel like I used to be in his same position. I came from a world of Black and Milds, Swishers, and gas station Macanudo's. You can only imagine my delight upon discovering RP. A premium handmade that was undoubtedly better than anything I've ever had before (not like that's saying much.) Plus, there are plenty of places giving these sticks 90+ ratings (including CA,) about half the people in the B&M's I frequented were smoking them and they carried a price point that makes you think "superior quality." I spent a buncha money on various RP 5 and 10 packs online only to end up gifting almost all of it to people who would smoke with me occasionally. I gave it out because I didn't want it anymore; because by then, I had better quality sticks and going back to these regularly wasn't much of an option for me anymore. And I know that I'm not only person on here that this has happened to. So, before he shells out all that money on a box that he might not even end up smoking all of, it would be good to have some opinions deterring him from doing so immediately. If he tries some other stuff but still decides he likes RP then great buy away dude. But I know that I wish I had someone guiding me when I started in this hobby. Couldda saved me a lot of money and hassle. There are people that I know that started to get into cigars and then bought indiscriminately and ended up with a bunch of garbage and were so displeased with what they were smoking they just quit the hobby altogether. I'd hate to see that happen to someone else who buys a box only to end up not liking it and then quits without really getting a feel for what this hobby is all about. Not trying to be a soothsayer of doom or anything here.

Dark stains on your fingers and lips?? I've been smoking cigars for over 20 years and never had a cigar stain my skin...
