Which do you all consider to be the better cigars...Rocky Patel The Edge Maduro, or the Olde World Reserve Maduro? I'm considering buying a box of one in robusto size. Thanks.
I don't smoke RP stuff so I cant tell you which is better. I can think of better box worthy smokes though but that's just my opinion.Which do you all consider to be the better cigars...Rocky Patel The Edge Maduro, or the Olde World Reserve Maduro? It may not be your palate that has changed. RP has a reputation of bringing out a great new blend, getting it to sell well, and then cheapening the blend. Maybe that's real or maybe it's Memorex, but it sure has been my experience with RP's. When the Edge first came out, that original release was spectacular, and I smoked a LOT of boxes of them, mostly in the maduro. Then they started to taste lousy. Same thing with the Edge Sumatra. Maybe the blends didn't really change and it's just my palate that has. Then again, when money talks...... Personally, I used to love both when I first started, but as my palate improved, the chalkiness of the smoke, combined with the dark stains left on my fingers, lips, and teeth, made me go in other directions. I then discovered there are a lot of better cigars for the same price, especially given the OWR's higher price point.
I don't think think anyone is trying to scare him off. I think everyone just wants him to make an informed purchase. Every cigar maker has issues with things, but RP seems to have more. I, along with several others, wanted to point out that their maduro wrappers leave stains everywhere. It's said that they color their wrappers to make them look more appealing and "maduro-y." Others have pointed out issues with inconsistency or other problems.I would say if you like the Edge, buy them. It's your money and don't let anyone scare you off. I think everyone starts with Rocky Patel and then realizes how terrible they are. I know I did as did most of my cigar club buddies. They seem pretty good until you really start smoking good cigars. I personally prefer the H. Upmann Legacy for $99 a box. It's a great smoke at a very good price point. Beats the heck out of the Edge.
I like them. Love the Decade. Haven't tried the Olde World Reserve yet...If you like RP cigars and want to smoke them because you like them, that's cool. Not my preference but it is up to you.
However, if you're coming here for advice about the kind of RP cause you're not sure, I would say there are much much better cigars with better quality tobacco for the price you are going to pay for those. Probably not active now but one site was selling Tatuaje Noella Reservas for about the same price. EPC has some good sticks in that price range. Surrogates and L'atelier can be had for around the same price if you look around.
Dark stains on your fingers and lips?? I've been smoking cigars for over 20 years and never had a cigar stain my skin...If you're not sure, absolutely don't buy a box. Buy fivers of each and smoke through those first.
