worked ok.

Beads or KL worked better than foam.

(unless you meant the science behind how they work and in that case, I don't know.)

Foam is not something you want for long term...it will fail after a year and you'll find mold and that's highly "ungood"....I use KL and love it. Beads work well..Boveda works well. Use something that has a good history for working well..foam is not your friend.

A little clarification….

Are you talking about the Humi-Care XG units that have the big water reservoir that has a chuck of the florist (green) foam?
Are you asking what to put in that reservoir instead of the foam?
I think the suggestions above were given with the impression that you were looking for an alternative solution to the humi-care. If that is the case, all of the above suggestions are great ideas.
If not, you are in the exact situation that I am currently in. I just built a built in cabinet humidor and had to head out on business before I could set everything up. What I decided to do was remove the foam and fill up the reservoir 3/4 of the way with heartfelt beads. I took the whole reservoir "holder" filled with beads and put it in a freezer bag with a 70% boveda to season the beads. I also seasoned the cabinet but thats a whole different process than what your even inquiring about. When I get home I will put the reservoir back on the unit and place it in the cabinet. My thought is that it will then be a active/inactive humidifier. It can then both absord and add moisture depending on what is needed. Hope that helps.

If that wasn't what you were asking… sorry haha

why would you put beads in the water reservoir?

Well the water reservoir comes with a big chunk of the green foam in it. From what I have read on here the green foam in terrible and a mold magnet. So instead of just having the reservoir filled with water (if it was meant to be this way they would have just done that instead of adding foam), I put beads in it for the reason listed above (adding and absorbing). This was talked about pretty extensively in another thread too, but with the Oasis unit. The guys on there had great reviews so I went with that.

Any thoughts or comments?
I would love to (and I bet he would too) hear them before I put the unit in.

Mine was a simple question. If you are going to put beads in and I have no problem with that, why would you put them in the reservoir and not in a shallow dish/dishes or mesh bags?

I'm sorry if that post came off weird. I didn't mean it to sound rude. I thought maybe you had a better solution and wanted to hear it before I put it in thats all.

To answer your question tho.
The unit was given to me as a gift, so instead of buying other containers and then adding fans I just thought I would take advantage of the built in fans. The unit also has the capability to add other fans too.
Putting shallow containers in multiple areas of the humidor is a great idea and seems to be the "trusty rusty" method around here. Since we already have the units, we just have to find the best possible way to set it up now.

My humidor is tall and so I am likely going to have to add some beads to the top too. If I was starting from scratch, I would just do like you suggested. Beads in containers. Much cheaper and easy peasy!

Thanks for the help.
No prob. Hope that helped some.
I went wiht he boveda seasoning after posing the question on here earlier. I have had bad luck with over spraying beads and having to dry them with a blow dryer. Which results in the little bastards being blown all over my floor hahah
So since I was going to be gone for a few weeks I thought, why not just put the boveda in there until I get back.

My only worry with the whole thing is that the fan from the unit will suck up a bead or two. Though I doubt they are that strong.
