Nothing more to add that really hasn't been said. My observations in the stores are:

1. More flavor from the bigger ring gauge - misconception that some smokers have.
2. More value - Robusto = $5, 7x70 = $7. $2 more for more than twice the tobacco (give or take).
3. Some customers think it's more manly to smoke a bigger cigar.
4. It's trendy right now, perpetuated by the manufacturers and oversaturating to grab a piece of the action.
5. Because it's trendy, shops tend to promote what sells for them and trimming small sizes from the shelf.

I like the way they smoke cooler than thin(er) cigars. The larger lit surface area means a shorter draw to get a mouthful, which leads to less oxygen to increase the temp of the cherry. Burning cooler means the overall flavor remains consistent longer, and has less likelihood of that burnt, foul, harsh flavor when you get towards the band (or farther!) I don’t usually hold a cigar between my teeth for long periods of time, but when I do I’ll just pick up a torpedo…

I think part of it borders on homophobia, where they somehow think thin RGs give the appearance of doing something feminine. Though I think that's a much smaller %, and typically stems from the stereotypical "bro" who has somehow wandered into the cigar shop.
Not to wander too far off topic, but homophobia and not wishing to appear feminine are not the same thing. Not sure you meant to equate them, but there's a big difference between having a fear of homosexuality and simply wanting to be masculine. I think most meatheads who want to be hypermasculine are idiots, but despite popular opinion, I embrace the differences between masculinity and femininity. That doesn't make me homophobic.

That being said, I do think sometimes there are "feminine" stigmas attached to smaller ring guages, especially the long and skinny vitolas. Lanceros just look funny when smoked, no way around it. It just looks like one of those cigarette holders a rich old lady might use in a movie. But man, they're delicious, and I do my best to reverse the stigma that lanceros are feminine whenever given the opportunity.

I honestly think this misconception is probably the biggest driver. The idea that you get a bigger cigar = more burn and smoke = more flavor. Also, a lot of guys like to puff hard and smoke quickly, and the larger ring guages allow for this with less penalties to the smoker, they don't grow as harsh as quickly, and put out more volume of smoke more readily.

I never cared for the big ring stuff and still dont. My buddy that started me into smoking always smoked robustos and toros so that's what I stayed with til I learned more and more. If it's over 56 RG I'll just pass on it unless like someone else said, if it's a box press, then I can handle a 60 RG. I really like stuff that's at or below a 52...

Well, I will be the bad guy,I enjoy the larger ring gauge cigars, not because of the amount of smoke, or the taste, I just like the size. I rarely get anything less that 52 and have a couple that are 70. I just never liked the smaller ring gauge and I don't have a reason. I don't know why, but I like them bigger,
