When I did it, I used a spreadsheet... toss it up on the cloud, and you can update it from anywhere via your phone/tablet.
I put a spreadsheet together too. I started smoking cigars again after a 5 year haitus so I have been buying samplers and five packs on auction sites. I found it difficult to remember which ones I liked the best after a few months. There are so many affordable good cigars available and I have a couple hundred right now.

I just set it up with the information that is important to me including some Date math so I can tell how long cigars have been in my humidors. I also added a column of links to online cigar reviews that agree with my tastes. Itl comes in handy when I'm ready to look for more five packs or a box of my favorites.

I found the Cigar Boss app to be clunky, the database was nigh unsearchable in many cases. I've been saving bands but more because I want to make something cool out of them to decorate a room later than anything else. I think, though, that I tend more towards smokinghole's philosophy of, "this is a hobby, I'm gonna just relax and enjoy it".

When I first started out, I used a spreadsheet. Most of the guys I smoked with thought that was overkill, they saved the bands of what they liked. I tend to go a bit overboard when I do something and the spreadsheet just wasn't enough. I played around with a couple Access databases, even tried creating my own, but I just couldn't work it out the way I wanted. Late last year I came across StogieRate and figured I would give it a shot. For the most part, it has worked out for me. I am using version 4.2 (4.3 is available). You can provide your own rating, along with capturing notes. It also let you track age, cost per cigar, and other details. While you can add an image of the band, it is from a set list linked to their website. I haven't played around to see if you can pull an image from a local folder. I am interested to see how the reviews come back on the other apps before I spend the time on doing the upgrade!

So after trying Cigar Boss, Cigar Geek, and a homegrown Google doc (I made a form for easy entry) I kept going back to Cigar Boss.

I'll write up why either tonight or tomorrow as each had benefits and weaknesses.

I had the Emerson's Cigar Boss app, but I realized today that the regular version has way more sticks. I was starting to run across a lot of stuff that wasn't in Emerson's and was irritating.

With all of the computer geeks here, along with the vast knowledge you guys (yeah, don't include me in that group, I'm still a N00b) why don't you create a BOTL tracker? Something that can pull from a data dump of all the cigars that the collective knows, and to some extent, review.

Just my $.02 take it or laugh me off the stage, throw rotten tomatoes and drag me with the big hook thingy...
