look around the base of the lid that twists off, and you will see a wee depression, horizontal and parallel to the lip of the lid. lift there with a coin (or the pipe bail works REAL well for that), and you will hear a hiss as the vacuum seal breaks. then twist off like normal.... I tried to get the tins that Sean sent open for a smell. Is there a secret? ..!

a coin will work as well if you're in a pinch. I love hearing these newb stories of trying to open tins. I remember my very first tin- Dunhill EMP. I twisted on that sum bitch so hard I almost made my hands bleed. Then i saw the depression and was like- oh....:hammersmaPipe nail?! *doh*look around the base of the lid that twists off, and you will see a wee depression, horizontal and parallel to the lip of the lid. lift there with a coin (or the pipe nail works REAL well for that), and you will hear a hiss as the vacuum seal breaks. then twist off like normal.... Of course. It's right there in my kit, and yet, I go running to the toolbox for a screwdriver.
I did that trying to open DE tins for the baccy pass. My hands were raw. I even tried using a set of those silicone jar-opener grippy pads, and completely shredded them! .a coin will work as well if you're in a pinch. yeah pretty much- It's even funnier in person. At the cigar shop a while back a guy came in and had a pipe with him, purchased a tin, and sat down. Clearly he had never had a tin before and I sat there almost crying watching him try to open it. I then had mercy on him and helped him. BUT it was great! What makes it so great is that we've all been there. I'm with you- a rite of passages for sure....I did that trying to open DE tins for the baccy pass. My hands were raw. That little nugget doesn't show up in any of the pipe starter 101 threads... Must be a bit of a rite of passage!
