I'm sure many of you already do this, but when I started buying cigars about 5 years
ago, I just threw them in my humis. I don't get to smoke as many sticks as I like to, so
I've amassed a sizeable collection by my standards. Now, I have no idea what's
in my humis, past what I've ordered in the last year or so.

My mistake--not creating a simple database and tagging system to keep track of what I own,
how many, and when I purchased them.

if you haven't created a simple inventory and are in the earlier stages of this addiction, then
learn from my mistake.

I have been doing it for 12 years solid and have no tracking system for my humidor. If I took the.time to input what I bought and have or get bombed, I would not likely delete it from the database. So I'm back to where I was so I don't worry about it.

@smokinghole, how do you know what you have? Do have a large humidor or humidors,
where you can easily see your entire inventory with minimal handling?

I've got a desktop 75-ct or so, and a wineador with pull out trays. I've got approx 500 total and no issues keeping track of or knowing what I have, probably because I enjoy going in every few weeks and playing Tetris to maximize stacking efficiency, so I have a good idea what's on each level at any given time.

Only other thing I do is sharpie the month and year on the bottom of every cigar when it comes in. That's a pain sometimes, but I rarely buy more than one box at a time so I keep up the practice.

If you're talking coolers or bunches of desktops, or thousands of cigars though...yeah that'd be tough to keep up with. I can't see myself maintaining a database each time I smoke a cigar though either, even an app on my phone.

I started with stogie rate then slacked off now I'd have to do an inventory of my tubs, though I have a pretty good idea as to what I have

I need to start doing this, I have no idea what I have and what was bombed to me. I impulse buy a lot and a lot of times I buy samplers so that I can try different stuff and usually have no idea what it is. I'm still new.

Personal choice for us smokers as some have an extensive collection and others under 100. Having a list of what you have is a good idea and it's also a good idea to journal about what you smoke....esp. when you hit on a great cigar that you don't want to forget about.

I recently downsized fairly significantly, so in general I could probably tell you where most of what I kept are from and when.

I use blank bands for all singles, that note where I got the stick (if it was a gift, I note the sender), and date of purchase, or box code date (if available).

Anything bought in quantity (which for me is a fiver or more) gets a small label on the cello with the date of purchase (and box code date, if available). If no cello (Tats, CCs, LPs) I use a small micron ink pen to write the date directly on the band in small print.

@musicman, that seems like the best way to go. I hope to be there one day.

Even with AC, My house, and especially my office, features sizable temperature shifts.

Current setup allows me to combat summer and winter temp shifts by lugging treasure domes
and coolidors between my office and the basement. Twice a year, my wife looks like she is
having a seizure from all of the eye rolling at the great cigar migration.

Great tip. I've started to label stuff in the last 6 months or so, but haven't came up a solution for Illusiones and Tats. Thanks!

Lol! Yes wives with rolling eyeballs seems to be pretty typical with this hobby. I too had issues with temp, but I moved to a house with a basement and just leave the the cigars in the cabinet down there all year long. I love basements. I also have them insured if we have a flood. Talk about eye rolling! "You are insuring what!"

At one time I had over 2000 cigars. I built racks for my 3 coolers out of hardwood and ventilated plastic bins from Walmart. Bought a 2" vinyl blind, took it apart and cut bin dividers out of the slats. Each cooler had 4 of these racks, so I could just lift them out and see what was there.

Over the years I've cut my inventory down to under 1000 cigars, but I still use the cooler racks to keep them organized. As many cigars as I smoke, I couldn't imagine having to delete something from inventory every time I lit up.

Now, if I had a bar code system and scanner, well that would be another story, lol.

Have a general idea of what I have. Don't care enough to do the inventory although at done point I did. Not too hard to categorize 7,8 sticks.
