So this past weekend there was a great sale one of my go-to smokes... I didn't pull the trigger because *gasp* I didn't have the room! My little 50 count is jam packed, & I've found myself smoking more than normal, just to make room for incoming sticks (first world problems, I know). So today I took the plunge & started my Poor Man's Humi,... 26 liters of plastic storage heaven!

I just put the kitty liter in it, will probably wait till I get out of work tonight to see what adjustments are needed. Any advice on how to season a few cigar boxes I've had sitting out for a while? Those will be going in to separate cigars & help maintain humidity.

It looks so gigantic! But then again, I used to think the 50 was spacious.

Haha thanks! I won't lie, I was eyeing some of the "decorative" duct tape, after seeing how you reupholstered yours lol.

On a side note, for you & your fellow Texans, I'm currently smoking a Kinky Friedman Utopian... Has your state flag stuck on the back! Had to look up who he was haha

First off, congrats on your new money pit..I mean lovely tupperdor..lol

Few tips, get a bunch of empty unfinished cedar cigar Boxes to fill the dead space and help regulate and hold humidity. What's going to happen if you don't, is that as soon as you open the lid, all of that built up humidity from the KL will be gone immediately and you will find yourself having a hard time regulating it. To season them, just wipe them down with a damp cloth a few times and set them in. With the KL, you won't really need all that many spritz's to get her going. Less is more to start, easier to add the humidity than take it away. Put the boxes in, spritz the KL a little bit, drop in the humidistat and let it sit for a day and adjust. Don't check it every hour lol. Keep it somewhere out of hot light or temp changes. Your humidity reading will go up and down with the temperature change (this doesn't mean that their is more or less humidity. ( to be honest you will need someone more knowledges to explain temperature vs humidity readings) otherwise, after 24-48 he's, you should be redy to go! Have fun with your new toy.

Much appreciated! I'll make sure to wipe down the boxes & set them inside before leaving tonight. The KL is just poured from the bag, nothing added. I'll spritz tomorrow once I see where it's holding at. I won't be opening it today, but I can't help myself from checking the hygrometer every time I walk by!

I had read about dead space causing issues with consistent rH... Was thinking of putting a few larger, sealed Tupperware boxes in there to take up space until I get around to actually filling it with sticks.

Congratulations on the new tupperdor. Better get yourself a good pair of hiking boots though because the slope only gets more slippery from here!!

3/5 King is spot on with his advice.....

The only thing that I would add is that you probably don't need as much KL as you have showing in the photo. What I have found is that it is more about surface area (how much is exposed) than it is about depth. 3/4" to 1" (about half the depth of what you have there) should be more than enough to be just as effective with the size of the container that you have. Speaking from my experience, having less in there will also make it less likely that you will accidentally spill some of the KL if you move the holder or bump the tupperdor.

You don't know Kinky Friedman? You really need a trip to Austin...

Admittedly, I've never had or heard of a Kinky Friedman Utopia. Rest assured, that will be rectified.

Just to add on to the excellent advice here: when you wipe down the empty boxes, make sure you used distilled water. It's cheap so, if you don't have any, go get some.

In a small tupperdore like that I think Bovedas would be much easier. Have 2 packs in mine and 3 trays from Wineador and holds rock steady. Mine is a 32 qt I believe.

Too late. The entire, original Kinky line (Utopia, Texas Jewboy, Big Richard, Lone Star, etc.) was sold off to CI. Looks like they only bought up the inventory, and not the label rights, as they are now gone from CI's site. Otherwise we'd be seeing Kinky's label slapped on CI dog rockets.

I still have a few original Big Richards and Lone Stars. PM me if you would like a sampling.

With that said, after being out of the cigar business for a while, Kinky is back, partnered with Havana Alley Cigars. I haven't had the pleasure of trying his new collection yet.

That's unfortunate, I enjoyed today's smoke enough that I'd buy some more!

As Argus said, these might be hard to find as they have been gone for a while. I might still have one deep in the humidor. I'll do some digging when I get time and see if I can find one for you.

EDIT: Got a chance to look sooner than I thought, and came up with one Utopia. It's yours if you want it Ducktapegonewild... just PM me your address.

Being as though your tupperdor may lack beauty compared to the conventional humidors, you'll likely find that it will do a tremendous job keeping your RH steady and will be a great home for your smokes. Been using a Lock and Lock for several years and it's been rock solid.

Congrats and enjoy filling it up. It won't be long until you're moving on up again.

Quick update: Before leaving for work, I removed some of the KL, as suggested. I was wondering, if I had a lid for the KL box, could I drill holes in the lid & then not worry about it possibly spilling as much?

Also, I'm not sure if it's needed, but I saw the idea of using weather stripping & applied that earlier. Got a ton extra if anyone ever needs it!

Yes. Even better, get some mesh and glue it under the lid to make a screen.

Brilliant! I've got plenty replacement screen doors laying around, thanks to a 3 year old & dumb dog who think it's fun to run through.... A small metal insert stopped them in their tracks lmao

So I lightly coated both boxes with distilled water late last night. The rH peaked at 75 & is slowly going down. Should I just be patient & see where it is in a few days? Or should I take out the boxes to "dry out" a bit?

I may not be the best to answer, but take them out and let them dry out. Or maybe just throw them out. You don't want to coat the boxes with DW because it can cause mold. Putting the boxes in with a bowl of DW and the KL to let it slowly rise to the desired RH is what you need to do.
