Hey brothers,

My wife and I are at the point in our lives where we are looking for a house, we have established that we don't want to live in NYC (5 boroughs) and probably can't afford the property taxes in long island so the next best thing for a more bang for your buck per say would be upstate. Do any of you live upstate and can shed any light on living conditions up there? Prices? taxes? Schools? of course good B&M's

We are looking for houses that aren't on top of each like the city but aren't spaced out where my neighbor is 5 gazillion miles away.. but also aren't 700,000 houses if you feel my drift?

Also if you have some real estate agents to recommend throw them out I'll give them a buzz see what they got!

Well you'd have to define upstate. I'm at the opposite end of the state, south of Buffalo on the PA border. Around here the definition of upstate tends to be anything west of Albany, but I know you city folk tend to think of anything not in the city as upstate lol
There's all kinds of space and houses around here - jobs tend to be the harder thing to find, but if I can be of help - let me know.

I would check Croton-on-Hudson, Yorktown Heights, White Plains, Scarsdale, Hartsdale, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, and Rye.

Thanks to everyone who answered...

To be more specific anything maybe about an hour to 1 1/2 hour drive from the city I guess would be a comfortable place that we are looking for ... Maybe this would help more ?

Ok - I'm out lol
Yorktown Heights and all along the Taconic Parkway / Bear Mountain is a beautiful area.

Yeah, anything Poughkeepsie and south we Upstaters still consider downstate.

I will give ya this, the further North you go, the prettier it gets. Lots and LOTS of city folk, LI, and Jersey folk moving up here in last decade or so and retiring here.
