I bought a 40 count humidor a few months back, but now I'm looking at purchasing a few boxes, so I've outgrown my humidor. Should the question now is should I get a bigger humidor and take the cigars out of the boxes or spring for something else? I don't have room for a cooler, but I could fit something larger than my humidor.

I concur with Misch. If you don't have room for a large cooler, get a few Tupperware containers. They weal beautifully, are inexpensive, and easy to maintain. Plus, as you need more and more storage space, you can just get another.

Rule #1... ALWAYS purchase 2 sizes bigger than you really think you are going to need..

If you outgrew a 40 count in a matter of months.. it will only be a matter of a few more before you outgrow a 100 count.. and a few more after that before you outgrow a 200 count, etc..etc.. (trust me.. everyone says "not me"... and a year later says "oh shit! he was right.. I wasted money on 4x storage systems over the past 12 months.. and could have just bought "XXXXX' right at the beginning"...)

My own personal story.. went from a 50 count.. to a 100 count.. to a small wineador (12 bottle).. to a small cabinet (600-800 count) to a large cabinet (approx 1500 count) all in the span of about 2 1/2 years... that was after already having been a cigar smoker for over 15 years prior...

once the collecting/aging/HTF/whatever bug bites you.. you are done.. and sticks are going to start multiplying like rabbits around your house..

Figure out where youre going to store that 120 qt cooler... youre going to end up in it anyway.. might as well go on and start making plans now.. :)

This is absolutely, 110% true. October 2013, my "humidor" was a large Ziploc bag with a moistened paper towel in it (tap water, nonetheless) and five cigars. A couple of months later, I built my first Tupperdor and that lasted me until April or May of this year when I finally built the coolador. Now I am not saying that I've outgrown the coolador yet, but I don't have tons of space in there, either.

You will need more storage than what you're currently thinking of and you will need it a lot sooner than you're thinking.

But, if you really can't find room for a cooler, get a few Tupperware containers and have them available.

I ended up having this same problem haha. But frankly I don't want more boxes, I am at three 50 counts and it will take me a while to smoke everything in those boxes. I don't want to hoard cigars so I decided I just had to smoke them, or send more bombs until I had space to buy more cigars.

Yup, same story here. Wineadors full and now I'm putting together a Coolidor for the boxes and "Aging Stock" that's gonna sit for a while. Use the Wineador drawers when they arrive for the "Active stock"

Give it 90 days... and youll be back buying and expanding the collection again..

its a ailment.. that cant be cured.. (sorta like herpes.. but without all the negative connotation :) )..

The boxes themselves supply ample spanish cedar.. (assuming you are looking to throw the box and all of its contents into the tupperdor?)...

Another option is to break down some boxes and line the floor and walls of the tupperdor with the panels to get some additional cedar in there... Ive seen guys do that with varying degrees of success..

Or... you can go on and buy that 120 quart cooler now.. and then order some shelves and trays for it from either John or Forrest.. since we all know thats where youre going to be in a few months anyway :D

If you're storing boxes and keeping the shrinkwrap on them, then just go to your local B&M and buy a couple of empty boxes. They usually sell them for a dollar or two. Since you're not storing singles, you can actually take the box apart and just leave the pieces of the cedar box in there. Just season them by wiping them down lightly with distilled water. Although, if you're leaving them in the wrap and not storing open cigars, there's no need for cedar.

But, if you're taking them out of the shrink wrap (which I do so that I can inspect the sticks) then, again, you can wipe down the cedar with distilled water to help maintain the Rh but in a small environment, a single box should suffice.

In my coolador (150 quart), I have 8 boxes/trays (along with a pound or two of kitty litter) and the Rh remains pretty damned stable - 67% was the highest during the humid Summer here and 62% was the lowest during the dry part of the Winter.

I actually have a 54 qt Coleman Sam Adams cooler that I have never used, but I live in a mobile home and space is tight. Would Boveda work in a coolerdor? What's the seasoning process?

a handful of boveda's would do fine in a cooler that size..

seasoning is the same as with a cabinet or a desktop or any other storage.. get you some RH media.. get you some spanish cedar (boxes, etc..)... get you a digital hygro... throw them all in and leave them alone over night...
check in the morning.. and adjust your RH as desired/needed (add DW, let dry out, etc..)... once you get to your target.. throw in your sticks.. and fughetaboutit...

Bovedas would work perfectly in a cooler. You'll just need a few of them for a cooler that size. If you don't already have the Bovedas a tray of kitty litter woudl probably be cheaper for you.

Seasoning applies to Cedar. If you're goign to line it with cedar or user cedar trays in it you want to get them to suck up all the humidity they're goign to before you put the sticks in. You can either just put the cedar in the empty cooler with a shot glass of Distilled water wait a while for it to stabilize, or speed up the process by wiping the cedar down with distilled water. Boveda also sells a high humidity "Seasoning Kit" but I think a shot glass of DW would probably work just as well. When I added the cedar trays to my wineador, I wiped them down with DW, then put them in a rubbermaid with the shot glass of DW for a week, then took out the shot glass and put KL and a calibrated hygrometer in there for a few days. Once it was stabilized at 65% I moved the trays into the Wineador and loaded them up.

Now, I'm by no means an all knowing expert on these matters, but this is what I distilled from the threads here and other internet sources and worked well for me.

PS Nice cooler! If you weren't so tight on space I'd say save that for BBQ's and pick up a plain old igloo from Wally World for the smokes :)

One other tip for a new cooler. Might want to check for a plastic smell inside. If there is I'd suggest washing it down with DW and Baking soda, then stuffing it with newspaper and leaving it cracked open for a couple of days to get that out.
