See if you can get it sealed enough first to hold a somewhat steady rh. It doesn't need to be completely airtight. It shouldn't cost too much to try that first. Just some caulking and weather stripping. Maybe some of those felt strips between the glass. Then, if that works, tackle the cedar.

for something that size wouldn't he be better off using a cigar oasis than boveda packs? Im a huge antiques buff my grandparents had an antiques shop/ super old schoo Sunoco gas station. I say go for it! If you cant get it to seal it will still be an awesome piece. If you cant get the glass to seal up you might be able to retro fit some type of glass on a hinge that closes to a seal. Are you gonna sand blast it and do a complete repaint? Something like this id take my time and do it right you will be a lot happier in the long run. Good luck! keep us posted

I'm a goof, when I should be sleeping I lay awake and think about crap like this. What if you built a cedar cabinet the shape of the cooler and put it inside that with its own sliding doors or hinged doors and then that box would be sealed with the cedar inside and you could just use your find as the carrier for the humi..... I need sleep.

If you have the time, patience, and the money I'd go for it!! I do like the idea that Lostmason added as well. If the top part doesn't work as the humidor for you, use that as the bar and try for the lower end of it for your smokes! I think it's a great idea! Good luck!

I like the project, but probably because I am trying to be a bit of a woodworker and restoring is something I want to try my hand at. As suggested, test for leaks. If you have leaks in the case, I would us a good food safe caulking. Or I really like the idea that was given about just building a csbinet inside of there and making your own door. Always a good reason to buy more tools and jigs!

It won't hold RH. It's basically a refrigerator, which actually creates a really dry environment. The reason it isn't airtight is because it's old - in those days they didn't care about seals or efficiency; it was just always running the motor and pumping out heat to keep everything cold. To turn the top section into a humidor you'd need some kind of humidifier and a regulating system, because it'd be leaking humidity the way the fridge would have leaked heat in.

Hey Throwbookatface, no disrespect but I would disagree. Since it is old it was probably built by craftsman. I have a 53 freezer that once the holes were filled (and I used body filler) it keeps RH perfect. It still has it's old seal, I did clean it with care. I believe if you take your time fill the holes in the bottom compartments, make sure you have a nice seal between the glass this would work great. I pulled the compressor out of mine and use kitty litter and it is rock solid.

I agree, It could be made to work. It all depends on his skill level to make it work. I think it could be a cool storage unit.

Well I ran into a huge problem. I decided to go for it and the thing was to wide to fit through a door. I was so focused on the humidity that I never stopped to measure the door. O well, time to look for something else. Trying to find a modern glass front display fridge from a convenient store. If I could find a cheap one that no longer works I could get rid of the compressor and just have a big sealed box to play with.

This is a great idea...Then you don't have to worry about the scent and/or toxicity of caulking.

Would it be possible to disassemble and reassemble inside? (...just a thought)

I looked at doing that but that it didn't seem it would be possible. I'm sure there would be some way but that would be adding a lot of work to an already big project so I just gave up on it lol. I have some friends who may try to turn it in to a bearded dragon habitat so hopefully it will still get a new life

Looks like this is what I'll be going with.

it may take me a few months of working on it when I have time and money, but when it's finished should hold a few sticks. The plane is to cover the outside in wood veneer so it doesn't just look like a fridge. Going to add some computer fans and some leds to the inside and fill it up with Spanish cedar and a lot of Kitty Litter. May use the left side for CCs or a pip tobacco cellar of sorts.

Sorry I haven't updated this in a while, however work got in the way and I have negletic the internet for awhile lol. It is still not 100% yet. Eventually I would like to get some proper wood drawers and I am collecting box tops to cover the outside. I am also trying to figure out how to install some thermoelectric cooler into it and an automatic humidifier so I do not have to keep 30lbs of cat litter in it. It works for now, and I have room to grow.

sorry for the horrible tablet photos.
