So I got a box of El Oso Papa today and as I was putting it away I through they were darker than normal. I dug out my last one form a previous purchase and sure enough... the new ones are dark compared to the last ones.
Any thoughts? Anyone have info on a change?

Don't mind the cracked foot. Its a hazard from shipping.

The darker one has a more pungent aroma. Might be because its ROTT. I opened the box about an hour ago.

Darker one smells light earthy. More dirt than grass.
Lighter one is very mild in aroma and very difficult to pick up. Its more woodsy but it has been sitting in my wine adore for a couple months.

Never heard of the brand, so obviously can't offer first hand experience. But would recommend contacting the seller, or even manufacturer if an accessible source as some boutique brands are. Find out what's going on from them and report back.

Off topic: how did you make those bands?

Smoke one and see if they are the same. I have seen the same thing in box's of Jericho hills. One be very dark and the one right beside it be lighter like that. They both tasted the same.

I was thinking it might just be a mother nature thing but its a fairly significant difference. The source was very reputable and Ill email them if Ben doesn't find something first. Im gonna be out of commission tomorrow and maybe for a few days. Ill update when I know for sure.

I use onlinelables.com and get them in sheets that I can print to. Alignment sucks but once its right I just use a template. You can write on them too but Im OCD.

They are still needing to acclimate. The USPS had them for a few days. Ill burn the one in the pic in a few days since it has a damaged foot.

Looks suspicious to me, I smell a fake! (but then, I always do, eh HerfDog?);)
Yeah dogs tend to do use their smell a lot. Its a dog thing.

But Id think theres nothing funky here, even leaves from a same plant can have varying coloration. I find these specific ones quite different though. Weird. But... Even sun exposure will change the color of a Cigar.

I bet the darker will taste better.

The wrapper description for these is Habano Ecuador Oscuro. In my opinion the lighter one would not qualify as an Oscuro wrapper. There are always large variations in wrapper color and shouldn't be an issue whatsoever. However, if a cigar is described as maduro or Oscuro you kind of expect that darker shade.

I highly doubt anyone is making fake El Osos. Most likely just a lighter shade of habano and they decided to let it slide at QC.

It's normal. Some companies are more anal about it than others while some just dye all their wrappers the same color. Some leaves turn out darker than others. Nothing to worry about.

If its darker under the band, then we're talkign sun exposure discoloration. Seen that before. Up to these sifferent shades between a top-row stick and the underneat stick.
