Dunhill Flake in a Dr. Grabow Starfire zulu. Fold & stuff method this time. This tobacco burns nicely when its allowed to dry out in the tin.

Still going over an hour later. It's amazing how long just one flake burns if you use the fold and stuff method. A lot of relights though because tamping is a little difficult. I think I will stick with the rubbed out method in the future.

Smoked a bowl of Prince Albert in my Big Ben Pipo on my ride home from work.

This is my third bowl of Prince Albert and I think I can honestly say that I really don't like this blend.

First blend I might toss.

Spring strong sweet tall green grass grow...

I didn't take a pipe today as I was laid up sick all weekend. Need to make sure I'm 100% for Anniversary Weekend with mama this weekend in Chicago. But, after last Wednesday I had Anniversary on the mind so I broke out some McClelland Anniversary 2005. Thursday in my BOTL Brigham Mountaineer 384 and Friday in the Stanwell Specialty 172

I'm no expert and my experience somewhat limited, but my higher end briars smoke much better than the grabows I have had. They don't have to be $100+, I have a briar that was like $35 that smokes like a dream. I look for briars that have thick walls and that have been drilled straight and pass a cleaner without issue. I like bent pipes, but tend to have issues with them gurgling. That being said, I love my cobs and they smoke excellent regardless of what I throw at them. I have found that certain blends are better in briar (I.e.Mississippi River) and others are better in a cob (I.e. EMP)
I agree 100% that you don't have to spend a fortune on briar to get a good smoking rig. However, very inexpensive rigs like Yello-Bole, Medico and the lower end Grabows smoke so poorly they aren't worth using. Missouri Meerschaum Cobs, particularly those with the hardwood inserts, smoke GREAT, don't really get ghosted, and can be smoked repeatedly which make them great choices when out for a day of smoking because you don't need to carry a lot of pipes.
