Probably when shady shopkeepers stop pushing their moldy cigars on folks telling them its plume. Went into a local shop a few weeks ago and at least 25 percent of the boxes had moldy cigars in them all splotchy like the one above. Sent the manager an email just to make him aware and of course he tried to sell me on the idea that it was plume. Sorry buddy, plume doesn't form on the outside of the cello. Needless to say I won't be shopping there anymore.

Alright...since we are a brotherhood, and I'm completely secure, here's some of the damn fool things I've done while smoking a cigar. Caveat: they're all alcohol-related...learn from me.

1. Ashed in my beverage; drank it anyway. (y)
2. Cutting the wrong end of a closed foot cigar.
3. Attempting to smoke the business end of the cigar, only to singe my face.

This happened at shop near me as well. The owner was 100% convinced it was plume and wouldn't listen to us. Regardless, even IF he was right, his customers still think it's mold.

Why is it so difficult for people to decipher between the two?

You're right; it's not rocket-science. Plume covers pretty much the entire cigar; mold is splotchy and looks a lot like the mold you might see in a shower or damp basement.
Yep, plus you won't see it on a 3 year old cigar. A cigar that was known to have mold issues that year and the previous year...

Don't feel bad - I've lit the wrong end before. Only with unbanded cigars or the ones where the band covers most of the stick and must be completely removed before lighting though, and of course, always alcohol-related...

And to think he is probably someones cigar guru. I hope he saves all of those plume cigars for himself.

If you really want to see what real plume looks like, next time you are in the grocery store go check out the plums. That whitish stuff that wipes off is natural plume. Just sayin.

I'll share the story of my first cigar with my dad, let's just say I was "18" for the sake of legality..

I was on summer vacation from high school and came down to the DR to spend a week at the factory with my dad, This was around the time he was making prototypes for the original LGs, so a little over 11 years ago. My dad and I were sitting at his desk and he reached across and handed me a cigar (LGs are quite full bodied for those that don't know) and told me to light it up. I lit it and started puffing away, he looked at me and told me "You know, if you really want to taste the flavor you need to inhale", so I did, because I knew nothing about how to smoke a cigar at the time. I spent the next 5 minutes in the bathroom on my knees in front of the toilet and I could hear him laughing at me in the background. I came back with some choice words for my beloved father and he told me "Now you know how not to smoke a cigar".

... I hope to have a son one day and do the same thing to him.
