Inquiry for Fellow Noobs, but Anyone Could Answer!

Z said everything I was going to. Thanks Z!Now you know why you never have enough storage...
For me (and though Im not a noob I face the same conundrum on a daily basis) I factor in a few things...
- smoking time: do I have enough time for a churchill or a petite corona. I want to enjoy the smoke and never have intent of pitching a stick half way through.
- time of day: a morning smoke for me would ideally be a mild smoke and they get heavier as the day goes on.
- what I feel like: there are "some times you feel like a nut and sometimes you don't". Sometimes I want something new, different and sometimes I just want a smoke I know will be good.
*note* none of the above ever prevents me form perusing the stash anyway
FWIW, it really depends on weather (when smoking outside) and/or time.
However, if I've had a really good albeit heavy dinner (like steak) and I have a nice after-dinner drink, I'll try to pair it to the drink.

When I was starting out id just grab willy nilly .... Id grab what ever, smoke it rate it /review it in my cigar app then over time you start to create a portfolio if u will of what u like via wrapper fillers etc vitolas time regions etc ..... It was fun looking back realizing I smoked some cracker cigars straight away and some really shit ones too some nice Cubans to start monte 2 , Coro ........ My advice grab what ever and light that shit up !!

Im still working on that myself it took me over an hour to pick a stick out last night lol normally it depends on how much time I have though
Time and weather are important variables. Are you celebrating or just smoking to relax? Also, for me, mood matters. Sometimes I want the heft and weight of a toro and sometimes the more elegant feel of a lancero is more fitting. There are a lot of factors, but if you nail down time, reason, and mood the rest is easy.
My big problem is the time and the weather. I usually just open the draws of my humi and let the cigar find me. I have duplicates of a bunch and some yard gars too, so they usually come with me in my travel humi when I'm out and about driving around and taking care of errands. That usually helps with narrowing down my smokes since I'd only have a few to choose from.
I got my cigar journal from Amazon. Just type it in the search bar and a bunch come up. The one I have is no longer made but there's other's out there now. I haven't wrote down and reviewed in quite some time but when I do it's worth it. Plus it's nice to re-visit smokes I've already had and compare notes to a previous smoking occasion.

haha haha ! Nope just was able to smoke in the house which is an extreme rarity. Wanted to make it count!
I'm newer to this as well, so I smoke by what I think has acclimated the best. I shoot for 60 days min, unless I get it from my local shop, which is usually ready to smoke.
After age, I choose based off of how much time I have or want to smoke. Shorter for shorter time, longer/fatter sticks for longer smoke time. Weather has a lot to do with this b/c I smoke outside pretty much everywhere.
Finally, based on what mood or time of day. Usually milder for earlier in the day/breakfast smokes. Later in the day, fuller smokes.
I'll also add that if I am drinking something with a smoke, that can make a difference as I try to pair the cigar closely to the flavor profile of what I'm drinking. Creamy coffee or bitter black coffee, or spicy rye bourbon, sweeter bourbons, IPA, Stouts, Pilsner.. they all have a type of cigar that goes with them.

I usually know what I'm in the mood for and how long I have to smoke, so my choice is usually a function of that. My stash is of a size that I usually know everything I have on hand, and I don't smoke every day, so the choice is usually made well in advance of when I actually get to smoke.
I think one thing I didn't do enough when I first started out is smoke the same stick a couple times before moving on. When your new and trying everything to see what you like, jumping from stick to stick can make it difficult to really figure out what you like and don't like. Sometimes there are "off" sticks in a bundle and sometimes your taste buds are "off". I am not saying to always smoke 2 or three of something before moving on but constantly switching can confuse your pallet early on.
