Honestly it's what appeals at the time for me. I can sit there and say all week that I want to smoke.. Let say a Jericho hill, then when I open my wine cooler I close it and go to my humidor and pick a CC lol. Also depends on what feel and taste I'm going for. If I want something stronger or smoother, I know where to gear. But mostly it's what pops to me at the time and how much time I have

My humidor has a divider in it. On the left are what I consider my 'special' ceegars...they are the ones I select when I want a more special smoke, ones I don't care to share, ones I buy when I have some time to spend in the spa, or just relaxing at the end of a good productive day. These would include Illusione Pactums and Fume de Amour, Southern Draw Firethorn, El Rey del Mundo Nicaraguan, D'Crossier 512, Camacho Connecticut and ABA, and similar. Don't care to share any of those.

On the right are the ones that are still excellent, honestly, they are probably the equal of any on the left, because price point means nothing when deciding what ceegars to purchase, and which ones are of excellent quality. But they are ones that I consider to be more 'pedestrian'. I usually buy them on special, or they have an excellent price point. Like Man o' War Ruinations (normal price point $9.00 and up but I buy them when they come on special, but easily the equal of any on the left side) Foundation Chillin' Moose (price point normally $2.40, but again, easily the equal of any on the left) Fallen Angel Devil's Ink (took advantage of several sales lately and bought about forty for $2.50 each, but, as usual, excellent sticks).

Then mixed in wherever they fit are the shorter sticks...the JDN Gran Consuls, the Puros Indios double perfectos, the La Perla Morado Black Pearl purple labels, more of the Devil's Ink cuz they are pretty short, when I get some more, the CAO Brazilia GOL!s, and like that. Because I don't have a lot of time to stop and smoke, these are the ones that often get the nod, so I always have a lot of shorter smokes on hand.

Which one to smoke at any particular time? Someone else said to open the humidor and the stogie will pick you. I think that's about as accurate for me as any other statement. I crave variety in my sticks, but it just seems like it takes the physical act of taking the humidor out of its spot and opening the lid...then one of the little devils will speak my name, and it will be it and I for an hour or two...

Pretty simple really, OP...just don't let this deal of ceegar smoking get to be a chore. Don't get all OCD over it. That's not the purpose. Not for me, and most other folks, anyway. No need for little spread sheets, notes, developing some sort of rotation list. Just go with the flow of the tobaccy.

If I can't decide, which is quite often, I grab anywhere from 2-5 that I'm thinking of and place them in order or right them down on a list 2-5. Then I ask my wife to choose a number or even go online and do a random number generator (haha). Sometimes I just can't decide on my own and leave it to chance.

For me, choosing a cigar is determined by several factors, the amount of time I have to enjoy, the occasion, flavor profile or just reviewing. But, life is way too short to smoke crappy cigars, ever!
I agree! I have an idea of what I want to smoke depending on what I'm doing (i.e. playing golf, sipping bourbon or scotch, yard work, fishing, or pounding some craft beer). Winter is a terrible time of year for us, for this cold weather I enjoy Illusione Rothchilds for example!

So this is a random question, but now you've been bombed and purchased some sticks on your own and the humi is nice and stocked, but now you want to smoke something....how do you choose what to smoke? Random grab? How do you know which Vitola to smoke? Which brand? Which ring gauge? As a noob should you just smoke any and everything until you run out? These are the questions I face when I go to pick out a stick lol I tend to complicate things but I'm curious what others do

Thanks!
I agree with @Mossome who said, the cigar will choose you. If you are new, as others have suggested, you should try various brands and also the multiple cigars within a particular brand. As you go along you will figure out what cigars you enjoy more than others (brand, vitola, natural or maduro, etc.). At that point your humidor will be filled with cigars you know you enjoy regardless which one you choose, mixed with some news ones to try that you find along the way. And that is when you will open up your humidor and the cigar will choose you! Enjoy!

For me I'm still at the point where most of the time I'm trying to smoke something new to broaden my horizons and I'm really trying to keep track of what I've smoked and log my thoughts as a reference (some days are much better than others). I'm typically buying samplers or no more than fivers so that I have a lot of variety.

Night to night this leaves me with making two primary choices - lighter or darker depending on how full bodied a stick I'm looking for and size of the stick depending on how much time I have to enjoy it that evening (I don't want to have to cut a new experience short, but don't want to ruin it by rushing it either)

I'm still VERY new, but it's my take today at least.

Get yourself a cigar journal. Amazon has a bunch up for sale and in your case it'll benefit you I think, since you're trying to experience new cigars everyday.

I'm actually using the pocket sized moleskine notebook to do this - works great because it's easy to carry with me.

Really, I'm only trying new cigars maybe 2-3x per week right now since I don't smoke every day and do have some repeats. Still torn on if I should just review every one including the repeats our only the new sticks.

This!
I think many of times I spend more time trying to find what I'm going to smoke than actually smoking it. My wife's rule of thumb is try to get it picked out and not go back to the room to exchange it within 30 minutes. Clearly a generous amount of time but sometimes I just need more time than that. So many factors, time, mood, weather, brand, country, how many of a brand I've had recently, how many of a select smoke I have left, is it Tuesday or Friday (I'm done with letting that be a stalling point for me TatTues, FuenteFriday, if I'm gonna smoke something else then I will), how much did I have to eat, do I really want to smoke this now. I grab a few and will narrow it down, and then make a pick, only to go back and end up picking something that wasn't even a contender.

For me, time is a factor. I prefer larger vitolas so i will go smaller length if I dont have time. I love con ecticut with coffee in the am so that can play a factor. Other than that I wing it.
