9 of these are wrapped in the San Andres from Willy, one is wrapped in CT broadleaf. Tell you what, the San Andres Willy has behaves very similar to the broadleaf. Toothy and very shiny. It's gonna be tonight waiting to try one of these

Four test sticks, identical fillers & binder, one each wrapper: Ecuadorian shade seco, viso, & ligero, then a Nic. Our brothers here have warned us that the Nic wrapper overpowers your cigar's guts; but when I got to checkout, I figured, what the hell, eleven bucks for a sample, nuthin. All four are extremely easy to work with. Sizewise, delicatewise, tastewise, & smellwise, I'm all over that seco so far. Gave them the smolder test -- all four smoldered a la vela, with seco smelling sweetest. Mighta found my replacement for H2K.
I'm curious to hear how the Nic wrapper tastes. Sounds like the Ecuador seco may be the winner. I would have thought the Ligero would be much darker than the seco.

It's nice to be able to buy smaller samples to try before committing to a pound.
Some wrappers never turn out nice and flat no matter how tight I wrap it. Thinner wrappers come out fine but the thicker ones definitely benefit from a second press. One such wrapper is the Pa Oscuro which always turns out a bit lumpy and veiny.
Last night I rolled a couple and placed them back in the mold over night for a final press with the wrapper on. While I was asleep the 'vein fairy' came and made everything flat and nice. Even the caps are perfectly molded into the cigar. If you have the time, which I do, placing them back in the mold takes only a few minutes and makes for a beautiful finished stick.

Flat boarding also works well... I have a press I use just for leaves like that PA-O... works wonders... I got the idea from days when I used to press flowers... only you have to Flat Board them when the leaves are misted so they don't come out dry. Wet the leaf place between two boards and screw them together... unscrew and veins are flat.

I've done it where I did tear the wrapper, and I've done it where I didn't tear the wrapper; but either way I made one helluva mold mark. Wrapping, after all, adds a couple RGs to the stick. What was snug before is gonna be tighter'n Oprah's spanx. Best success I've had is wrapping a 46 rg perfecto, then sticking it in a 50rg mold. Doesn't smooth either end, but it does smooth the barrel. Flip side is, it parallelized the gentle swelling I carefully encourage in my barrels. In sum, I don't get the put it back in the mold idea.
Someone at work asked me the other day: "Are you any good at rolling cigars?" I had to think about it a minute. Then I replied: "It's apparently one of those things you never do think you're good at yet."

I totally agree... we never do think we are good at it... however it never stops being my favorite part of the roll
I get most excited about the wrapping stage lol... Funny thing .. I was just talking to a customer who always buys my duds... he said... your duds aren't duds anymore... I told him... yes they are The sticks I roll now will be duds in two months ... as time rolls along I get better... so the current dud used to qualify as a good roll... I look at some of my old duds and laugh and I look at some of my old qualifiers and laugh even harder.. now... it's a pretty close draw between a dud and a qualifier... a dud now may have some unevenness or cosmetic flaw or I forgot to put a leaf in the blend that belonged in there or I forgot to marinate it or something that I forgot (hate Fibromyalgia... I'm always forgetting things) ... needless to say... we are our own best and worst critic ... but it makes us better at what we do and I have yet to find a cigar roller who isn't humble about their craft... I think not always being confident keeps us humble. There are some people I've never given a stick to because I lack confidence in their critique I always think my sticks could be better... they are never perfect to me ... which keeps me disappointed sadly lol kinda oxymoronish lolThis is an interesting subject.

I'm not sure... I'm always scrutinizing them... how they look... how they smoke... are they long enough... short enough... are the cuts clean... straight... are they aligned... is the color consistent... are the wraps clean... do they smell good... is the blend as good as I think it is... is it wrapped tight enough... too loose... are they balanced ... was there enough glue... too much glue... will they stand the test of time... is the finish smooth or are there divots ... will it be memorable in a positive way to the smoker... is the construction solid ... will they give a wonderful burn and a lovely ash... do they measure up to major manufacturing standards... etc. I think I look at a stick and say... would I give this to the president of the USA to smoke? Of course I say... not yet... I have a few other people before him that I think ... am I ready to have THEM smoke my sticks? If I can't say yes with confidence then I think I have not reached my personal bar of excellence... for me I am working my way up that list of who my sticks are worthy of being smoked by ... I'm getting there, slowly but surely... I think when I wouldn't hesitate to have Arnold Schwarzenegger smoke a ReMix then I would be satisfied
