Is it normal, as your taste and experience grows that your palate changes, I am finding more cigars that I enjoy and less that I consider bad. Or am I choosing better cigars? Just curious about your experience. I do know more about cigars now than ever, I know what to look for with flavor and tobacco blends. I started with Connecticut wrappers, and now I find that it is not as important. I suppose that this maybe normal.

Yup. As you get more experienced, your palate sensitivity decreases, so you're able to appreciate a wider range of flavors and profiles. Eventually, your taste will begin to refine and you'll begin to only really enjoy those smokes that really appeal to your palate. Enjoy the stage right now, sample everything, but don't stock up on much!

I have refrained from buying boxes. Still buying singles, I did buy some six-packs on cyber Monday. The cigar I have liked most is Crowned Heads Luminosa, and I only have three in my cooler right now. I do have quite an assortment of other cigars but only one or two of each. My buddy and I stood in the humidor at his favorite B&M, he Looked at me and said: "I now understand women and shoes!"

I couldn't agree more with what ninja said. When I was a novice I stocked up on crap. Bought boxes and bundles sight unseen. Smoked alot of garbage, (not thompson iguana bad but bad) seconds, and factory overruns. I could have spent the same amount and got fewer great smokes. I don't even really care for good anymore. Price isn't always an indication of enjoyment as well. The newer punch gran puro santa rita are under 100 a box and a fantastic one dimensional smoke.Opus x are very expensive and probably in my top 3, I would rather buy 3 opus than 90 average smokes any day. 5 packs are really good for sampling. I found la aroma de cuba mi amor as well as others that way. Then I buy boxes of them. I have gone from smoking crap, to liking a bunch of stuff, to having a particular flavor profile. I know what I like and stick to it. I see Padron, Opus, DPG's, Fuente hem, and up, and the like in the same categories. Smoking out of a boxs over and extended period of time has helped me have a better understanding of the life cycle of a cigar. Ive found what I like and understand the time tables that they should be enjoyed by.
Additionally, I've found that aged Padron 4000 5000 etc aged a couple years are almost as good as the serie 1964 etc.

Let's reserve comment on my mental state until you get your MD. and your Psychiatry license.:nurse:

been smoking Opus for 20 years.
overwhelmingly bad cigars ,I think the ratio has been 1 out of 5 good ones, one out of 10 great ones, and 1 out of 25 outstanding ones.:banghead:
Keep in mind I only buy them 3 times a year, and I pay huge prices......:greedy:.

You've probably had alot more than I have. I've probably only had 20 or so and I can remember telling my buddy on more than one occasion this is the best stick I've ever had. Not all of them but some. And if I've got a 4% chance of having the best cigar in my life it's worth wading through streams of mediocrity.

you should buy a couple of boxes then, and you will always have an extraordinary cigar waiting for you.
do you like the Anejo too?

I've noticed mine changing already. I started with Acids like others have, and less than a month in I'd prefer the real thing. Can't wait till my palate refines enough to pick out nuances like others do.

I found that when I first started out my palate was changing pretty frequently and something that changes my opinion is what I pair my cigar with...whether it's a coke, water, beer, or liquor and can change your experience with each cigar. Try a few different pairings with a cigar you like.

Why on earth Tom, would you smoke "an overwhelmingly bad" cigar for 20 years? Life is too short.

each year I try these, all my friends are howling about how great they are.
I am handed at least one or two a year, and I buy a couple to return the favor.
Cynthia Fuentes has even given me one at a Fuentes event.
That was one of the best ones, there was drinking and dancing later.
Difficult to hate a cigar in those conditions.....

Try everything. Some things you will love then hate later, some things you will hate then love later. Eventually you'll probably become a FOG and just smoke a few different sticks.

Sounds like they are not for you, just stop buying & smoking them.

Imo one of the best is the Fuente Fuente CG, about $14 MSRP for a 90min smoke. I wrote a review a few years ago on Puff. Cigars are subjective, not all tobacco hits everyones palate the same. Some people dont like the cinnamon in Opus or anise in Anejo, some people cant even detect it....the people that pick 'em up and dont approve call it heavy tannin and will only smoke aged Opus. I personally have never experienced an overwhelming tannin level to that degree in fresh Opus. I have however experienced it in fresh Habanos, D4s and Monte DE come to mind. A sharp stinging sensation on the tongue. I like both cigars, just not fresh...typically. A bit of spice and pepper is good imo so long as its the right level & isnt overwhelming. It can add depth and balance. I get a lot of unique spice out of Opus just as I would out of some ERDM. If your budget is tight I would stick to the common vitola and skip all the fancy rolls.

To your original post, youll refine your palate as you smoke more and settle into your comfort zone. Id say I have a wide appreciation for different tobaccos but there is a lot of stuff I stay away from.
