The hurricanes have been slamming the tobacco growing regions with a vengeance.
Does anyone know if or how badly it will affect prices or availability of our favorite leafs?

Who cares about the leaf. That's the least important thing right now.

All that matters right now is the safety of the people who live in these affected areas.
Good point actually. Its true I wasn't thinking about the people I'm kind of ashamed. I forget sometimes just how good I have it and thinking of tobacco before people is not acceptable. Sorry. I'm really not that self centered.

I'm not sure how the economies of the Islands will recover. In addition to the human toll many of the features that made the area attractive to tourists have been wiped out. In addition to the immediate concerns of personal survival I believe the hurricanes will affect the area for many years to come

No worries, just a sad thing knowing some of these areas have been devastated to the point that some families will never be able to rebuild their lost homes.

The damage is beyond repairing in some areas. The news shows overhead shots and if it weren't for the rubble you wouldn't know a town existed

I don't see the US making the same commitment to rebuilding the area that they made after Katrina and the east coast storms.

The Red Cross has raised millions ... we will see the integrity of this charity with time I guess

Some have been quick to say this charity is one of the worst tho ...

I used to work in the Red Cross headquarters building in DC (not for the Red Cross) - was one of the nicest buildings I have ever worked in...just saying.

I know we received a check from the Red Cross after Katrina. It was a blessing. The problem I have is a lot of people that where not affected in the least by the storm also received checks. Just like the workers charging me outrageous prices to get my property ready for a travel trailer ate a lot of free Red Cross meals.

They also socked away months worth of MREs.

It's only been 2-3 weeks. To what degree do you think the government should provide after a weather disaster? Search and rescue? Food and water? Medical assistance? Safety from the scum that will try to rob and steal from those affected? Providing housing and shelter as much as possible? Low interest loans to help people rebuild? Making sure utilities are back as quickly as possible? I think the govt has done an excellent job of providing help and assistance to those affected by the recent hurricanes. Katrina wreaked havoc along part of the gulf coast. Harvey and Irma wreaked havoc to the whole state of Florida and a large chunk of Texas. At some point people need to be responsible for themselves and where that falls short volunteers help any way they can, whether it be donations or their time and sweat. To think it is the govt's responsibility to do more is unrealistic IMO.

The US government has little monetary responsibility for many of the areas affected. Emergency services, food and water are basics and our humanity says we need to help. Rebuilding infrastructure, compensating people for losses of property, rebuilding the cruise ports and restoring the economy will be debated in Congress.

BTW, I'd show you a picture of my house.......but we never found it!!!

Did you see the Gulf Coast immediately after the storm and then see it again today?

I haven't seen it today. I know when we had our tornado it took about 2 months for the disaster trucks to clean up the debris in a 6 mile by 1 mile strip of town. After 3 weeks I would expect the gulf area affected by Harvey to still be a mess.

New Orleans area after Katrina needed new schools, firehouses, police stations, levees, roads, bridges, government offices, sewer systems, hospitals, pumping stations, nursing homes and parks just to mention what comes to mind. The power grid was almost completely destroyed. Much of this was built or rebuilt with either grants or matching funds from the federal government. SBA loans and grants to rebuild homes and businesses. Billions where spent to rebuild the Gulf Coast. Federal money is still being spent to upgrade damaged infrastructure. I just don't see the US footing the bill to rebuild in the Caribbean.

Losing a home to a tornado is a terrible thing but it is localized. Normalcy exists a couple of miles away. Can you imagine the scope of destruction from Katrina? I had to drive 2 hours to Baton Rouge to get gas for the generator. 3 months to get power.

Add to that the assistance Houston and Florida needs?
