Today I should be at work. Instead I am doing the most HATEFUL home repair of them all; replacing the water heater. I've rated replacing the disposal, kitchen or bathroom plumbing and attic furnace-AC work pretty low, but NOTHING is as distasteful to me as replacing the water heater. Naturally with my background in remodeling I can't claim inability & just hire somebody. Oh no... The wife insists I save money and do it myself...

Just think, you could be putting in insulation in a hot attic with glass all over your skin!

Good luck with the job

Oh and it can't be that bad, you're posting on BOTL

It shouldn't be that hard...I can think of worse...granted, I've never done it before but almost thought I was going to have to.

When we were gone for a week in February for Ian's services one of the cats stepped on the hot water lever on the clawfoot tub upstairs and the hot water ran for who knows how long.

When we got home the water heater had been running to long there was a pool of water on the floor from the persperation on the coils.

i was afraid it fried the coils near the burner. Thankfully all was fine.

Sorry about the home repair job bro. I agree that a water heater replacement would have to rank right up there with sanding drywall and insulation in August. Hang in there.

Hired the local handyman. $300 bucks. Best money I ever spent.

Ok, just so you guys know.

American home shield costs about $520 for the year. I just got my pool pump fixed for a $55 dollar co-pay. They fixed the impeller and the sealer thing, fixed my pressure gauge, fixed a leak (which took them replacing about 3 feet of PVC including angles and all the BS involved).

The previous owners had the roof replaced for the same co-pay, same with the HVAC, same with the Water Pump.

I'm due to pay again this summer, I'll do it gladly. :peace:

Water heater is usually a piece of cake job. It normally takes longer to drain down the old one then actually hooking up the new one! And that's for a gas heater, electric even faster.

Yep. I have done it. I have also replaced full bathrooms, kitchens, and rebuilt engines. The nice thing about getting older is knowing you CAN do it but dont HAVE to do it.

I hear you Chuck! I'm getting closer everyday. I've stopped most of my car repairs and cherry pick the rest. Since the final college tuition payment was made on March 1st I may be doing even less!!!

Water heater replacement ... bah! Easy stuff.

Try dealing with septic system problems ...
Or tree roots in the main sewer line ...
Or leaks in the roof during a long downpour ...
Heating oil tank replacement ...
Raidiant floor leaks ...
Electrical line shorts ( "somewhere" in the wall )

I've seen a lot of nasty jobs over the years. The yearly one I dred is cleaning out the gutters. Damn things sure can hold a ton of leaves + dirt.

All home projects suck.

The only reason I do water heater replacements is because someone pays me. It would take a pretty good reason for me to do it for someone for no pay. Sex maybe? Depends on what she looked like, and whether or not I would get caught......
