No offense, but every Jefferson is a blend. Barrel should always be from selected barrels. Now that being said, not sure who at HyVee sampled each barrel..they prolly didn't....they prolly said "We want to offer a HyVee exclusive....we will buy 1k barrels of your choice, they all must be 50% to get this yield..."
Now barrel strength is different clearly...its usually 120+...its usually uncut and worth it.
No offense taken, nor intended by me either...
Not sure what you mean by the HyVee reference. I'd never tried Jeffersons until a few weeks back when Mason Masters led a tasting at Gomers North. He is pretty highly placed in the Jeffersons company, is involved in blending/sampling barrels, and private barrel picks, among other things. We tasted their lineup, and while there is nothing "wrong" with it, there is a grain note that doesnt fit with my personal preference. While Jeffersons has started distilling, their own juice is very young, so all bottles are still sourced whiskey (which they wont disclose who).
Funny thing, attended a George Remus tasting the following week with the Master Blender from MGP. The Remus lineup, except for their oldest stuff, had the same grain note... Hmmm...
Compare the Barrell Batch 15 I have, and the grain forward note is nowhere near as prevalent. Right up my alley. At $90, though, it's hardly a value. Good, yes, but I can get equivalent a lot less expensive.
Imo, worth chasing? Depends on what your profile preference is, how value conscious you are, and if you are a "check it off the list" bourbon drinker. It's worth a checkmark in my book. I likely wont buy another, though.
