New to the site. Funny, found this thread first off (after my intro). I think I found a new home...

Pic of my open bottle table and Knob Creek barrel I participated in selecting for a local LS. Not shown is my bunker of 40+ bourbons and 30+ rums...

I look forward to sharing my nightly sips with others that appreciate the good stuff. Tonight was a little Evan William's SiB 2007, then a fantastic Store Pick of 1792 SmB, finishing with a finger or two of Jeffersons Ocean Wheat. Not a fan of Jeffersons, but got to drink it occasionally to free up space on the shelf...

Most people on this site are cigar smokers that enjoy the occasional sip of bourbon, scotch, rum, whatever. I'm the opposite. Bourbon is a passion of mine, and I'll occasionally grab a good cigar to enjoy with my pour...

A few posts upthread, I saw the Mid Winter's Nights Dram. I bought one last year, wasnt a huge fan, but pair it with a bold cigar... Wow. High West also does barrel finishes (port, barrel aged Manhattan, MWND, and other barrels) on some of their lesser products like Double Rye and American Prairie bourbon. They go for half the $ of MWND and pair with the cigar just as well. The bottle has a pearly sheen to it. If you see one, try it. Around $50 here.

I still have half a bottle of DR finished in MWND from last year, and just picked up a bottle of DR finished in Barreled Manhattan barrels last week. I'll have to compare those tomorrow night when I finally have time to sit back and enjoy.20181107_125944.jpg 20181107_125932.jpg

Things have been crazy lately, so I haven’t had much time to post. Sipping some Barrell Bourbon New Year 2017.

Heading to the beach tomorrow with the wife to celebrate our anniversary. 6 years and three kids later, and were still going strong.

We’ll be swing by a restaurant with probably one of the best bourbon selections in the mid Atlantic, so I’m looking forward to grabbing a few really nice pours. Over the summer I had a Willett Family Estate 15yr and 2016 Four Roses limited Edition. Will probably also grab a bottle of one if there private picks depending on what they have.

Someone tell me about barrel bourbon. Worth chasing (within reason)?

No...not in stores most the time. Just being honest...this one is 35%rye and its about 5 bucks cheaper than the offered equivalent so its worth getting.

Now if I get the go-ahead to post a link to our 1792 barrel pick...jump. it will be 47 before shipping for a BARREL STRENGTH barrel pick (120+ proof) that a select few picked for a Bourbon club...that is worth its weight.

I've only tried 1 bottle and really like it. Is it far superior to other bourbons? No. It's a solid bourbon, but priced a little high. It's better than most of what you will find on the shelf, but a discerning buyer can come close at a fraction of the price (I paid $90).

Barrell is a NDP, sourcing all of their juice. They are very transparent about it, though- at least as transparent as their non-disclosure agreements let them be. One nice thing is that they are not married to one supplier. They buy from any number of the big boys and blend with pretty good results.

Compared to other NDPs, Barrell is well above average. Imo, beats the hell out of Jeffersons and plenty of others. A step behind Belle Mead's SiB product, Old Scout SiB (no longer available).

There was a good interview on Bourbon Pursuit Podcast with the two main guys involved. Oh, the Barrel Rum (v1) was amazing too...

No offense, but every Jefferson is a blend. Barrel should always be from selected barrels. Now that being said, not sure who at HyVee sampled each barrel..they prolly didn't....they prolly said "We want to offer a HyVee exclusive....we will buy 1k barrels of your choice, they all must be 50% to get this yield..."

Now barrel strength is different clearly...its usually 120+...its usually uncut and worth it.

Let me know if you do this. I’d be pretty interested assuming I don’t spend way to much on bourbon over the next week lol.

And I’m super jealous you are part of a club that does barrel picks.

No offense taken, nor intended by me either...

Not sure what you mean by the HyVee reference. I'd never tried Jeffersons until a few weeks back when Mason Masters led a tasting at Gomers North. He is pretty highly placed in the Jeffersons company, is involved in blending/sampling barrels, and private barrel picks, among other things. We tasted their lineup, and while there is nothing "wrong" with it, there is a grain note that doesnt fit with my personal preference. While Jeffersons has started distilling, their own juice is very young, so all bottles are still sourced whiskey (which they wont disclose who).

Funny thing, attended a George Remus tasting the following week with the Master Blender from MGP. The Remus lineup, except for their oldest stuff, had the same grain note... Hmmm...

Compare the Barrell Batch 15 I have, and the grain forward note is nowhere near as prevalent. Right up my alley. At $90, though, it's hardly a value. Good, yes, but I can get equivalent a lot less expensive.

Imo, worth chasing? Depends on what your profile preference is, how value conscious you are, and if you are a "check it off the list" bourbon drinker. It's worth a checkmark in my book. I likely wont buy another, though.
