Tonight my company will be moving servers to its new datacenter. Everyone is required to come and help. This means I must stay after my 8 hours shift till tomorrow morning, then come back the next day. I suspect that there will be a lot of cranky people tomorrow.

For anyone interested, we will be moving probably 800+ servers from a bunch of different customers. Some with special network setups which we will dissemble and cart off to the new location 20 miles away where the installation team will reassemble.

All of this is the build up of weeks of preparing, some details not given to us until this week. This should be fun :pokemyeye :sadcry:

Sounds like a factory shut down and refit, like I used to do when I was still in the field.

We'd upgrade services, hook up new equipment, and lamp an entire factory in a given 48-96 hour period, to minimize downtime. That's a lot of electricians working straight through. Just take a nap for a few hours, strap on your tools and get back at it.

I loved it, I could get 3 weeks pay in one week back then.

Have fun!

They picked a bad week to do it. Especially with the new DST change and all. Good luck man. We are busting our ass at the moment to verify that all servers we are responsible for are patched for it. Only about 130 out of 1000 that we have to manually check now that are hiding behind firewalls or are just cranky and old.

Maybe at the next meeting you could bring up the idea of more virtual servers?:scratchhe
This is actually an idea i've talked to some people about. We currently have virtual hosting, and individual rentals or hosting hardware. There are no virtual servers at the moment.

Anyway, I spent the entire night moving stuff out of the building. We started moving our important customers and I thought this would be a multi night thing. After the second batch went out my boss said to get 150 more servers ready before they get back. Then he told us just to take every server out of there, they were moving all of them. Plus there were switches and other hardware and it was just a general mess of confusion.

I finally got to leave at 7AM and was going to try and sleep and go in for my regular shift but I am so sore now and feel like poop so after getting a few hours this morning I called out and someone will be covering my shift. This means I am actually free during the day today so maybe I will actually smoke a cigar for once if its not too cold in the garage or somethin.
