It seems our 9 year old daughter will need braces. Her teeth are way too tight and some baby teeth are not coming out, now causing the adult teeth to come in bad. Her smile looks good now but does seem to be getting worse and the teeth are getting out of line. There is a newer braces called Damon Brackets. Briefly they are self-ligating brackets or "Damon Brackets." Self-ligating means that the brackets do not need the little o-shaped rubber bands (ligatures) or metal tie wires to hold the arch wire onto the bracket.

The pros seem to far outweigh the cons from what little I know. Now I need to come up with the $5,000 to fix her teeth. I better start selling more paper.

Anyone else have this type of braces or someone close to you that does/did? I would like feedback on this particular style as that is what our Otho has recommended for our daughter.

Don't know about the new stuff, but I had a mix of hollys braces and retainers when I was young to fix my overbite. Worked like a charm.

Trust the orthodontist. They go to school for a reason. Good luck, and your daughter will thank you in about 5 years when she's got a perfect smile!

I am in the same boat as you. My 9 year old needs them now and my 7 year old will need them in a couple years. :crying:

We haven't started researching them yet, let me know what you find out.

Wish I could help Steve. My oldest daughter is the same age and may be looking at braces as well. I've never heard of these, I'll have to ask her dentist when we go next month.

Holy Cow! Braces @ 7 & 9 these days. What happened to when all of your adult teeth are actually in your head? This seems extremely young especially when you still have some baby teeth left in your smile. I've actually asked my Dentist about this for my kids and he said that he would be driving a Mercedes instead of the Cadillac if he were to recommend braces for the pre-adult teeth kids. My kids will have to go through what all kids went through and that's probably braces in High School when all of the adult teeth are in. This way there will be no crowding issues or anything like that. No risk for have to re-do braces because the ones @ age 9 didn't quite do the job because some teeth didn't grow in correctly. Too much money to drop twice, I'd rather spend it when it counts for later in life... Just my .02:smile:

My eleven year old daughter just had braces put on this past summer, but they were the standar type (I guess) with an expander. My wife is a dental hygienist, so I just let her handle that stuff.

I totally agree with you. I had braces put on in the 6th grade, however old that age is :dunno: I see no point in getting them when your baby teeth are still there.

Damn that is pricey....dentists.....

I would think braces on baby teeth help the next set come in properly but that is a complete guess in the dark.

I read your post as "self-litigating," that if they didn't work right a lawsuit would automatically be filed. :)

My son is 11 and just had some baby teeth pulled. He's been going to the orthodontist for about 2 years for "observation" so they'll start at the right time. You didn't say who recommended the "Damon Brackets" or if you'd just read about them. I'd research and discuss them with the dentist/ortho and go with whatever he recommends if you're confident with him. If not, I'd find someone else.

My kid needed them, had them and now she is 14 and they are off.

$4800.00 it cost me.

Every six weeks at the Ortho for an adjustment and then listening to her as well.

Now 2 1/2 years later we have perfect teeth and she still needs a retainer ( she wears this while sleeping) to keep the teeth in place.

But her teeth are PERFECT !!

Its worth it, Your kids health is priceless.

How old was your kid when he/she got them? I know dentistry has come a long way since I was a kid but I still am from the old school of what good for the goose is good for the gander. I guess my dentist is also under this impression also.

30 years ago me and another guy were the only two in elementary school to have braces. Those were the ugly metal one's that made you look like the villain "Jaws" from the James Bond movie.

The dentist told us last year she would need them. Seems some of her baby teeth that are not coming out on their own are causing overcrowding, which is most of the problem. She might need to have those extracted or they may come out very fast once the teeth start shifting when the braces kick in. I checked on-line for prices. $5000 does seem about right. It covered all work including the X-rays they did not add extra for. Any and all work is included and two years of follow up after the braces are off. My Dad thinks he paid $3000 for mine. I lost one set of retainers. Dad replaced them & told me if I lost those he would not buy them anymore. I lost that pair too. Sadly my teeth ended up shifting some over the years.

I think the Damon Brackets are just a new way to do things. I see lots of metal like the old one's. No ratcheting down of the wire like I had. Damn that hurt for a few days and you would get metal stabbing the back of your mouth all the time. These seem to work faster with less pain.

Anyone else with information before I pull the trigger?

Oh I most certainly make her wear and take care of them Maddie. I lost my retainers twice; the last time my parents would not pay for them (which I knew). My teeth shifted years late because of this. :noemotion

Do some research on your own. Our dentist told us a year ago she would most likely need braces as there are several issues like overbite, crowding and the adult teeth coming in crooked. This checkup visit the dentist recommended us to visit an Ortho and the Ortho agrees. Seems the baby teeth not coming out when they should are most of the reason for the overcrowding. Either now or later for her. The longer we wait the worse things can get and more expensive things will be.

Go to several orthodontists if you have them in the area. We went to three then verified with our dentist who was good and who was just raking us over the coals. The one we ended up with for our daughter saved us $1500 but he had to retire because of severe back problems. The replacement was an idiot but the end result was still good. She got hers off last fall and is very happy. Both of us had to have them as teens too, back when they were the full ugly bands. Hopefully our son won't need them, his aren't crowded like hers were.
