Last night I think I had a revelation!

I think I know the difference between Islay, Highland, lowland, & Speyside whiskys.

I started off with a Dowmore 17 then tried the Balvenie 15. HUGE difference. The islay is a smokey drink while the highland is a sweeter & cleaner tasting. I also had a glass auchentoshan triple wood that was sort of on the sweeter side but different than the the highland, was a little toasty but not smokey. The speyside Glenlivet was very clean but slightly sugary.

So am I starting to get it?

Absolutely!

I had some Balvenie 21 yesterday, WOW! Clean and sweet like you say.

Try Laphroaig for a very smokey, peaty, slightly salty scotch.

well done indy! i'm still in the first phase of my scotch tenure....
Like everything we talk about on BoTL...whisky is another slippery slope.
In the short few months that I've been drinking whisky, I have about 9-10 bottles of the stuff.

Very addictive...:halfgrinw

I generally don't like scotch, but there are a few I really do love...and Laphroaig is one of them. It's a peaty, smokey scotch with a wonderfully strange metallic/medicine taste.

BTW, the Laphroaig Quarter Cask is better (IMHO) than the 10 or 15 y.o., but it's not the easiest thing to find. But if you find a bottle of it, buy it!
