Did you know that Southwest Airlines has an official policy for large travelers?

Customers who are unable to lower both armrests (the definitive boundary between seats) and/or who compromise any portion of adjacent seating should proactively book the number of seats needed prior to travel.
Customer of Size Q&A

How dare they!

FYI--I'm not a fan of SWA...they kicked me off a plane once and stranded me in Houston....all because I left my cell phone on (idiots).

I am all for it. If you cant fit in one seat you should have to buy two. Why make the person next to you uncomfortable because someone can't lower their armrests?

Hey I like to plan, I am no small guy but I can fit in a a airline seat. I fly alot for work and I can not tell you the time over the years I have been seated next tosomeone who should have bought two seats. An hour to 1 1/2 hour flight I can deal but I do a lot 2, 3, 4, and sometimes 6 hour flights and that sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about if the person next to you smells like a stinkhole? Or uses heavy amounts of perfume? Or has a really bad cold and is sneezing all over my drink? Or has an annoying habit of humming God Save the Queen? Why should I have to put up with that? Are you going to make the person buy two seats because you don't want to sit beside someone that smells like toxic waste?

I happen to be overweight, but the reason I can't put the armrest down is not because of my weight, it's because it happens to hit my artificial hip and is extremely uncomfortable. That hip is going to be in the same place whether I weigh 150 or 350. So tell me how that is fair? By definition, I fit that description, but if it weren't for my artificial hip I would have no problem. There are a myriad of reasons why someone might just fall into this category. And if the person that is complaining happens to be some whiny bitch, well then you are going to tell me I have to pay double? Because "Precious" has a personal space issue?

Try riding the NYC subway at peak time, you'll learn to get over personal space issues in a hurry.

I understand what they are trying to do, to provide the best service for ALL of their customers. But just remember one thing. This is how smoking bans got started. It's not that different. Let's change a few words from a quote from the SW website that Clint put up.

<LI class=listDoubleSpace>Why ask smoking Customers to not smoke?
We could no longer ignore complaints from Customers who traveled without full access to clean air due to encroachment by a large amount of smoke whose body extended into the neighboring airspace. These Customers had uncomfortable (and sometimes painful) travel experiences, and it is our responsibility to seek resolution to prevent this problem.

I am not sure you can compare this with smoking bans, It is SWA imposing this regulation on their customers, who choose to use that airline, not the goverment forcing a private business that people are not forced to go into to ban a legal activity.

Ya I am gonna tell you you have to pay extra because why should I be uncomfortable because the guy next me is spilling over onto me? I paid good money to fly comfortably and safely to my destination. If you don't like thier rules don't fly the airline.

First of all, YOU aren't going to tell me anything. I don't happen to fly Southwest. As I said in my post, they can do whatever the hell they want. But there are plenty of other situations that cause other passengers to be bothered that should be addressed also.

I have paid good money to not sit beside someone who stinks like a pig (not implying you do, I don't know you). So should I get a refund for that? My money is just as good as anyone elses. I have a right to not deal with smelly people. Some people have severe allergies and can't take perfume smells. So should they have to pay extra just because they physically take being close to someone like that?

Like Warren Sapp has been saying on Dancing with the Stars, Fat Boy ain't going down on this fight!

I'm not comparing it, I'm using it as an illustration as to how discrimination becomes acceptable. We as smokers are discriminated against, and it started just like this.

Kevin, I'm not sure if you're aware of this, so allow me point it out just in case:

Discrimination isn't illegal unless it's against a protected group (smokers are not; neither are large people)

Agreed. The movement started just like this. IMHO discrimination is acceptable in a private enterprise, to a point. I am not saying I agree with that practice, but I believe in peoples right to do as they please in a business they own. In the same example, if I want to allow smoking in my business I should be able to.

Perhaps this shoudl be in the debate room.

This thread's got me wondering: are there any "smoking-friendly" airlines out there?
Yes we flew some crazy middle easern airline from Frankfurt to Switzerland. We had missed a flight in LA so it threw us off for our connections overseas. The plane was an old beater with 70's styling inside, but the best customer service and ammenities possible. Free beer and wine, eye cover, slippers heated towels. ok Back to the smoking issue. YES smoking was allowed, but only in the smoking section, as there were both a smoking allowed section and a no smoking section. The smoking Section was on the Port side, and the NO smoking section was on the Starboard side of the plane.:scratchhe

Spilling over can be taken in both context; literal and figurative. Kevin already said that perfume and other noxious aromas can make for an uncomfortable flight...which is what I guess you are eluding to by saying that a large person spilling on to you is uncomfortable.

We can go on and on, but the bottom line is they are going after more money from customers of size because they can. First it was excess baggage charge, now it's excess weight charge.
